Historical Tidbit: Matfield River

The bridge over the Matfield River & the elm trees along the bank are shown here.  Tannery pits were dug near this spot.

The process of tanning animal skins to make the leather
and fur usable was multi-step, involving skinning, curing, soaking, liming, removal of extraneous tissues, deliming, bating, drenching, and pickling. The water overflowing into the tannery pits helped with the soaking process. Hides and bark were soaked for months.

Healthy EB Coalition Receives $25, 000 Grant!
Good Afternoon,

I am excited to announce that Healthy East Bridgewater has received a $25,000 implementation grant! Thank you for all of your hard work during the planning phase - we are energized to begin implementation, and we still need your help!

As discussed in past meetings, we are looking to create community gardens and community classes focused on nutrition and physical activity. We have created a survey to collect further input from community members regarding these two focus areas. Please take a minute to complete this short survey, and feel free to pass it along to any East Bridgewater resident who may be interested.

Here is the survey link:

Disabilities include deaf/hard of hearing, blind/low vision, motion, cognitive or speech disabilities. Anyone who is a Massachusetts resident with a permanent disability and residential phone service can qualify for this program. There are several types of equipment available, each offering special benefits based on the disability. For more information, or a complete list of equipment, please join us at the Center for this free presentation.

Skylur Spagone Walk For Children
A great day for a great cause!

Cotton Eyed Joe
Time Honored Spagone Walk Warm Up Tradition: Cotton Eyed Joe

Roughly 420 Walkers, up from last year, spent their Columbus Day morning walking through East Bridgewater to raise money for the Skylur Spagone Fund.

The Skylur J. Spagone Memorial Fund would like to thank everyone who helped make the 16th Annual "Walk For Children" another success! We had over 400 walkers and raised $23,000 to continue to help the children of East Bridgewater!

Funds are used to provide opportunities and needed supplies for the children of East Bridgewater. "This year would have been Skylur's Senior year in High School, so we are going to something special with the senior class," said Peter Spagone, Jr., Skylur's father.

From the The East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School Athletic Department: An Advertising Opportunity

The East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School Athletic Department is initiating an advertisement program in our community. Our plan is to attach 3'x5' aluminum panels along the fence facing the seating area of our stadium bleachers. These blue and gold panels will advertise local businesses and organizations that support the East Bridgewater Jr./Sr. High School. The cost for the first year would be $500 (this includes the manufacturing of the ad display by local vendor). Each year the renewal fee would be $300. All revenue collected would be used to support our co-curricular programs, including music and athletics.

We are confident that you will agree that the exposure your ad receives with our program has a value far in excess of the relatively modest expense. During the 2014-2015 year over ten thousand spectators attended events in the stadium. In addition, many of the events are broadcast on East Bridgewater Community Television and this will provide additional advertising exposure.

Your pledge of investment benefits both your business and our East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School students. This community support will enable the students to maintain the tradition of excellence that has been established in Viking Country.

Please consider this offer as a dual opportunity to both advertise and support the youth of the town.

Further information may be obtained from East Bridgewater Athletic Director, Tom Kenney (508) 378-5850
at the East Bridgewater
Jr/Sr High School.

You may also contact EBBA Member, Bill Cavanaugh, at Merchant Sign directly with your design (colors and sign size will all be uniform). Merchant Sign will bill the school district and the school district will send out the invoices to the business.

One of the great programs offered at the Council on Aging is
The friendly visitor program. This is a volunteer support system that provides companionship and contact with the community for those who are isolated or unable to get out to activities. A visit from a friendly visitor can brighten someone's day. For more information, or if you know a person who could benefit from our program, please contact Kelly Long at 508-378-1610.
If you would like to volunteer, adults of all ages are welcome to volunteer. Please contact us at the above phone.
