Historical Tidbit: TELEPHONES

The first entry on Halifax town records of telephone service was from the Southern Massachusetts Telephone Company saying, "You are hereby notified on erecting poles and placing wires, etc., for telephone service." This refers to Thompson Street, Middleborough line to Walnut Street and Walnut Street from Thompson Street to Bridgewater line on November 3, 1899.

On March 6, 1901, privilege was granted for poles from the Post Office to the Plympton line and from Plymouth Street to the Monponsett Hotel.  [The Post Office at that time was located in a store that sat where the present Pope's Tavern is today.]

In 1904 a permit was granted to place poles as far as Bosworth's Mill [located on Furnace Street] going along Monponsett Street and Plymouth Street. (It would come soon to Summit, Thompson, Pratt and River Streets.)   An intense period of telephone installations took place between the years 1901 and 1910.

116 years ago this November our ancestors waited patiently for a phone line to keep in touch with the outside world and hear from family far away. Today we wait for the next version of cell phone to hit the market. Not many families even have a "land line."

Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

Click Fix Program Comes to Halifax

The Town of Halifax is now using a new program that will allow residents
to report quality-of-life issues and request services through an online
and mobile interface. Powered by SeeClickFix, the place-based reporting Commonwealth Connect platform allows residents to document neighborhood concerns and improvements alike, ranging from litter and flooding to damaged sidewalks and malfunctioning traffic signals.

With the online and mobile reporting platform, residents can report
quality-of-life concerns through service request categories via
or use mobile applications available for download from the Town's web site.

When submitting issues via mobile app, for example, residents can
provide location, descriptive, and photographic information as they
see the issue in real time. Once the resident submits an issue, the
person reporting the issue, the Town, and anyone 'watching' the area
will receive an alert. Halifax can then acknowledge the service request,
route it to the proper department, and update the request and residents following the issue, once it has been resolved.

Launched in 2008, SeeClickFix allows citizens anywhere in the world to
report and monitor non-emergency community issues, ranging from potholes and planted trees to garbage and graffiti. Through web and mobile applications, as well as embeddable widgets, SeeClickFix empowers citizens, community groups, media organizations, and governments to work together to improve neighborhoods. It is the most widely distributed citizen-reporting tool in the country, having recently surpassed 1 million fixed issues.

In 2012, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts initiated a grant program to launch the platform, powered by SeeClickFix and titled Commonwealth Connect, to communities throughout the state.

Halifax in Lights Committee
While the 2016 edition of Halifax in Lights, the Town's summer
celebration, is nine months away, the Halifax in Lights Committee is
looking for residents and others to serve on the Committee. Halifax in Lights is one of the Town's largest events and the planning and fundraising for the event must start months in advance, so volunteers are needed now. Anyone interested on serving on the Committee can contact the Halifax Board of Selectmen's office at 781-294-1316.
Overnight Parking Ban for the Winter Months
The Halifax Board of Selectmen has sent out the Town's annual notice
concerning the overnight parking ban in Halifax from November 1, 2015, to March 31, 2016. In addition, the Board has reiterated that the Halifax Highway Department is not responsible for damage to property placed on Town property or within the rights-of-way for streets plowed by the Town.

This includes, but is not limited to, mailboxes,
sprinkler systems, trees, shrubs or landscaping, fences, lightpoles, etc. In most cases, the Town owns 10 feet beyond the asphalt surface for roads accepted by the Town. Mailboxes should be installed at least four feet from the edge of the asphalt to the front of the mailbox. Many of the plows that are used have a wing that extends two feet or more beyond the cutting edge. This, combined with the snow coming off the plow, is what causes most of the damage. It is impossible for the driver to see the edge of the asphalt under the snow; therefore, the plow may be off the edge of the road at times. In heavy snow conditions, the Department tries to push the snow at least a foot off the road.
