The Catholic Center and Saint Basil Chapel in Bridgewater
                                      Celebrate 50th Anniversary

For half a century, the Catholic Center and Saint Basil Chapel has offered hospitality, friendship, service and prayer among the Bridgewater State University and Town communities.  On November 15, 2015, the Catholic Center, with roots as a Newman Club in 1936, will celebrate its 50th Anniversary at 122 Park Avenue on the BSU campus.

Dinner reservations may be made until November 1st at www.stthomasaquinas.com $35 / per person

That Sunday, former Chaplains will celebrate an Anniversary Mass at 3:30 PM in the Chapel, accompanied by a host of current and former music ministers.  Community residents and BSU Administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends are cordially invited.

An Anniversary Dinner will follow at 5:30 PM in the Rondileau Campus Center Ballroom.  Newly-inaugurated BSU President Fred Clark, and his wife, will attend. Keynote speaker Lou Ricciardi, former BSU Trustee, will address "The Place of the Catholic Center in a Secular University." A short video tracing the legacy of the Center will be featured.

A 50-Square Commemorative Quilt telling the stories of various members and groups affiliated with the Catholic Center and Saint Basil Chapel will be unveiled on November 15.  Highlights of the Center's historic founding and history will also be on display that week.
For further information on the dinner:  Rita Garufi at (508) 531-1346 or at ritagarufi@bridgew.edu

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary, the Catholic Center invites donations that will fund a perpetual endowment to defray the cost of spiritual and charitable service retreats, in the U.S. and in developing countries, for students today and into the future.  The goal is to reach 1,000 donors who "Give 50 for the 50th."

Donations can be made online at http://www.stthomasaquinas.com, or by checks payable to "Saint Basil Chapel, Give 50 for the 50th."  Further information can be obtained from Leo Cote at (508) 697-6072 or at ldcote@aol.com.  Businesses are encouraged to contribute by calling Mr. Cote.

 Historical Tidbit:
Carver's Pond, like all ponds and lakes in town are man made mill ponds or portions of left over mining operations of bog ore or clay.

Carver's was created by damming up South Brook, which originates on the new high school property, in the early 1700's by the Edson family for a mill pond. The Edsons, and later the Washburns, used the water power to run a small iron mill, manufacturing iron implements from the abundant bog ore in the area.

It wasn't until almost 100 years later that Eleazer Carver took it over for his cotton gin business, giving the pond its current name. As time went on, Carver's business grew and the advent of steam power the use of the mill pond as a power source faded. Carver moved his manufacturing to Plymouth Street and then to East Bridgewater.

The last commercial use of the pond was for ice, up until the 1920's and today it sits on top of 50% of the town drinking water supply. Our water is deep under the pond and not in it.

TEAM TIFFANY!

On October 11, we rode to cure Friedreich's ataxia (FA), a debilitating, life shortening neuromuscular disease that affects the heart, eyes, bones; the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow and live a normal life. We rode with local FA families, friends and cycling enthusiasts to redefine what is possible in FA research.

We want to thank everyone for your support in the past. FARA is in the last leg of the marathon to find a cure!

This year, Tiffany is joining us in her wheelchair bike that she received from FARA's Ataxia Athletic Initiative Grant. We are very excited to be Team Tiffany!  Please donate: checks can be made out to FARA and sent to 20 Woodland Drive, Bridgewater, MA 02324, 533 W. Uwchlan Ave, Downington, PA 19335, or just follow this link and donate on-line to Team Tiffany!

"Remembering Franklin D. Roosevelt,"
Tuesday, Oct 27, 6:30pm
Bridgewater Public Library

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Franklin Roosevelt, a president whom many historians celebrate as the greatest president of the twentieth century.

Join us as we discuss how FDR's New Deal Programs worked to relieve the unemployment crisis of the Great Depression and in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, to fight and win a war in both Europe and Asia. No matter how grave the situation appeared, a confident FDR assured the nation that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

Hylander is currently an independent scholar who specializes as a presidential historian, a pedagogical specialist for the National Endowment for the Humanities and professor of history.

The event, which is funded by the Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library, begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library and is free and open to the public.
"Ready for the Holidays?" at the Bridgewater Public Library presented by Bettie Howarth, Certified Financial Counseling Professional on November 4th.

Join Bettie Howarth of the American Credit Counseling Service, Inc., a United Way Community Partner.  Although the holidays bring cheer and celebrations, they also bring stress to many, especially when it comes to finances. The key to enjoying an affordable holiday season is creating a budget that covers all expenses.
Topics of discussion will include how to develop and stay within a budget, tips for reducing expenses, as well as how to prepare for the impact of higher fuel costs this winter.

The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Public Library, is free and open to the public.
