Skylur Spagone Walk For Children
A great day for a great cause!

Cotton Eyed Joe
Time Honored Spagone Walk Warm Up Tradition: Cotton Eyed Joe

Roughly 420 Walkers, up from last year, spent their Columbus Day morning walking through East Bridgewater to raise money for the Skylur Spagone Fund.

The Skylur J. Spagone Memorial Fund would like to thank everyone who helped make the 16th Annual "Walk For Children" another success! We had over 400 walkers and raised $23,000 to continue to help the children of East Bridgewater!

Historical Tidbit:

Our present day thoroughfare running east and west is known as Plymouth Street (Rt 106).

It was first identified on a Latham Map as having been established in 1667. It was then known as the Bridgewater Trail, the best road that connected Halifax and Bridgewater.
An 1875 record states that the road from the Plymouth line " was to be crowned 1-1/2 feet in the center and all the upland."
It went on to say "The best materials found within the limits of the locations, to be reserved for a dressing, so as to form a hard and durable surface over the whole extent of the road bed.
Side and gutters and culverts are to be converted when necessary to carry off surface water."

sue and her plant
We may complain today about our "potholes," but at least we have "a hard and durable surface" to travel on.

Respectfully submitted,
Sue Basile

"Spooky Salsa Saturday"
A Fun Night for All Members of the Family
Saturday, October 24

St. John's Parish

Little Ones: 5:00 pm
Tweens: 6:30pm
Teens: 8:00pm

Please join us for our "official" kick-off to our second year as a Parish and Youth Ministry. We had a lot of fun at our Taco Tuesday's this summer, so we are bringing them to the Parish Hall for the school year and turning them into Fiesta Friday's. (Our first night is being held on Saturday so that everyone can enjoy the home Football games.) This month's celebration will include a Halloween Spooky Theme. We will have crafts, games, music and tacos for all ages. We have broken the night out for each age group. The little ones are welcome to come in costume. If you have ideas for games or crafts you would like to be included, please let me know.

Since this is your first evening, it would be helpful to have an idea of how many are coming so that we can plan accordingly. Please email me at nhenn71@hotmail.com to let me know how many to expect.

There is no admission charge, but we will have a basket for goodwill donations to help us build our Ministry budget to eventually allow us to offer these events at no cost.

As with almost all of our events, EVERYONE IS WELCOME! You do not have to be member of St. John's Parish to attend. Bring friends!!

"Stand By Me" from this past June. Bob Ferrante, Lead Vocals
In Memory of Bob Ferrante
Bob Ferrante's life was full. He had music, he had very dear friends and family, and he had his faith. A true testimony to how he lived, is how he transitioned from this life.

Bob loved music and its ability to bring people together. People can speak the same language when they play together. This allows them to connect.  As a teacher at Brockton High School, he saw it every day. A bandleader for this diverse population; he gave his students common ground. As a founding member of Dale and the Duds, he experienced it every concert, as they were asked to perform show after show.

In a recent conversation about his illness, Bob expressed a deep appreciation for life and expressed wonder at the diverse people who were praying for him. His music, faith and life had touched many and they were responding with prayer: "Not only do I have many different Christians praying for me; Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, Congregationalists; but I also have Jews and Muslims praying for me."

Bob said that he could feel the warmth of the many praying for him. It kept him going, keeping the pancreatic cancer at bay for over a year so that he could play one more season with Dale and the Duds. He only stopped in August of this year when his body could no longer do it.

Dale & the Duds & Four in a Row, Columbus Weekend, 2014

The seed for Dale and the Duds was planted just after Woodstock. Then teenagers, the guys got together just to play for the joy of playing. They didn't have a name, they didn't have a plan, they just wanted to get together and play music that made them feel good.

They played mostly music from the 50s and 60s, the kind of music that makes you tap your feet and sing along. There were a few other musicians in the beginning, up to eight at one time, but within a couple of years the band thinned down to lead singer Dale Julius and his brother, rhythm guitarist Randy Julius; lead guitar player Mitch Mackiewicz; bass player and vocalist Paul Ayers; and drummer and vocalist Bob Ferrante.

Officially starting to play publicly in 1971, people have continuously turned out to hear Dale and the Duds and be reminded that people are good, that life can be fun. Some years they played over 100 shows. The Duds were dedicated to each other and their music. Bob took joy in the connection that happens in music and there never stopped being a demand for it. It was needed back in the 1970s and it is needed now.

Robert M. "Bob" Ferrante, age 64, died Saturday October 3, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the devoted husband of Martina J. (Turowski) Ferrante for 39 years and loving father of Marc A. Ferrante.
Bob was a 1969 graduate of East Bridgewater High School where he was class president and president of the National Honor Society. He earned his bachelor's degree in music magna cum laude from Boston University and master's degree in education summa cum laude from Fitchburg State University. Bob enjoyed a lengthy and accomplished career
in music as both an educator and performer.  In lieu of flowers, mourners may donate to the Robert Ferrante Memorial Scholarship Fund through any Rockland Trust Bank branch in the area www.rocklandtrust.com or Cure Pancreatic Cancer Lustgarten Foundation at www.lustgarten.org.

From the The East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School Athletic Department: An Advertising Opportunity

The East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School Athletic Department is initiating an advertisement program in our community. Our plan is to attach 3'x5' aluminum panels along the fence facing the seating area of our stadium bleachers. These blue and gold panels will advertise local businesses and organizations that support the East Bridgewater Jr./Sr. High School. The cost for the first year would be $500 (this includes the manufacturing of the ad display by local vendor). Each year the renewal fee would be $300. All revenue collected would be used to support our co-curricular programs, including music and athletics.

We are confident that you will agree that the exposure your ad receives with our program has a value far in excess of the relatively modest expense. During the 2014-2015 year over ten thousand spectators attended events in the stadium. In addition many of the events are broadcast on East Bridgewater Community Television and this will provide additional advertising exposure.

Your pledge of investment benefits both your business and our East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School students. This community support will enable the students to maintain the tradition of excellence that has been established in Viking Country.

Please consider this offer as a dual opportunity to both advertise and support the youth of the town.

Further information may be obtained from East Bridgewater Athletic Director, Tom Kenney (508) 378-5850 at the East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School.

You may also contact EBBA Member, Bill Cavanaugh, at Merchant Sign directly with your design (colors and sign size will all be uniform). Merchant Sign will bill the school district and the school district will send out the invoices to the business.
