Fun with Mysteries

Monday evening, September 28th, 2015, the Friends of the Library at the Halifax Holmes Public Library funded a dynamic duo introduced by Director Laurie Cavanaugh, known as award-winning authors, creative mystery writers, and one -- a local investigative reporter for WHDH-TV Channel 7 News in Boston. The other -- a book review critic for the Boston Globe.  If you haven't already guessed their identities, they are Hallie Ephron author of NEVER TELL A LIE, THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN and COME AND FIND ME. along with Hank Phillippi Ryan, Investigative Reporter, Author of the CHARLOTTE MCNALLY SERIES, and THE OTHER WOMAN, WRONG GIRL, TRUTH BE TOLD, and soon to be released, WHAT YOU SEE.

These two interesting, informative, funny ladies entertained all in the Community Room of the Holmes Public Library with their stories of how they decided to write mystery stories and tricks for keeping characters straight and believable. Hank uses an outline and, of course, research, and as an investigative reporter of 40 years, has many experiences and memories that might help in the research of her past and future novels.

Hallie, on the other hand, explained she has an IN and OUT box for her writing as she plods along, she rereads what she has written...,.,.some stays in the "in" box and other sections get put into the "out" box to be discarded. Hallie spoke of how some of her story lines come from her own experiences or areas of her life, along with many, many hours of research.

Both Hallie and Hank have been friends for many years, and do a lot of creative writing workshops. Both belong to the Mystery Writers of America, as well as the National Sisters of Crime. Hank is also a founding teacher at the Mystery Writers of America University.

These two outgoing ladies shared parts of where they grew up, where they get ideas for their novels, mistakes made and accomplishments. The audience of both women and men, could be heard laughing right along with their guests as they literally "bounced and shared" their thoughts, reminisces, and stories of success.

I could go on and on about these two ladies, as I have met them before last night. Hallie Ephron was in attendance at our monthly adult book club a few years ago when she wrote "Never Tell a Lie," which was our chosen novel for that month. I also attended a writer's program at another local library with both present. I could go on and on, but if you like to read, if you think you would enjoy meeting these two outstanding authors, then go to their web sites, and follow where they might be next. It might be local; grab a friend and attend..........believe me, you won't be sorry you did...

Respectfully submitted, Maureen Rogers, Friends of the Holmes Public Library, Halifax

PART 3
CHASE WILD ANIMAL FARM
(REPUBLICAN ELEPHANTS)

"Another experience Sturtevant had with elephants at the farm was in 1956. Three large elephants being used for the Republican campaign were boarded at the farm.
"About four in the morning the night they arrived, I was woken up to elephants trumpeting. I ran over to see what it was," said Sturtevant.  "When I got there, they were trumpeting and having a ball. They had torn out all of the electrical conduits and were throwing tools, hay, anything they could pick up with their trunks all around the building," he said.

The elephants were being housed in a brand new building and the electricity was not yet working. The building had been constructed to hold elephants, but the farm had been dealing only with younger elephants, never with elephants of their size. So, until they were shipped out, the elephants were tied down outside where they wouldn't get into so much mischief.
"Some of the animals were taken on the fair circuit, to the Brockton, Topsfield, Tri-County fairs and others," Sturtevant said. The animals that had been taken to the fairs a few times never had to be coaxed into the truck. He said they loved the fairs for all the candy, popcorn, cotton candy and other food the fair goers would feed them.  Sturtevant would accompany the animals to the fairs. He and the other workers would have to sleep in the truck with the animals. "One experience you never forget is waking up to the noise of lions and monkeys right underneath you calling for their breakfast," he said.

The Halifax Cultural Council is now accepting applications for the Council's Fiscal Year 2016 grant cycle.  All applications must be submitted to the Halifax Cultural Council, 499 Plymouth Street, Halifax, MA 02338, no later than Thursday, October 15.  Grant applications and other information are available on the Council's web site: www.town.halifax.ma.us/HalifaxMA_Bcomm/Cultural - This year, the Council's priorities include an emphasis on events in Halifax, but not just in the "municipal center;" programs related to nature, science, environmental education and the Town's history; programs for seniors, library patrons, and teens; and programs involving artists and speakers Halifax.  Applicants can obtain more information through the Halifax Board of Selectmen's office at 781-294-1316.
The Town of Halifax will remove the barriers to the boat ramps on Route 58 (Monponsett Street) and Lingan Street/4th Avenue on a temporary basis from Friday, October 9 to Monday, October 12 to allow boat owners to remove their boats from Monponsett Pond. The barriers will go back into place on Tuesday, October 13. For more information, please contact the
Halifax Selectmen's Office at 781-294-1316.
West Monponsett Pond is Unsafe to Use for Recreational Purposes
Hi Folks,

After Tuesday, jersey barriers will be placed at the Route 58 boat ramp and the Lingan Street/4th Avenue boat ramp in order to prevent easy access to the ramps. This is being done because, despite having signage up indicating that West Monponsett Pond is unsafe to use for recreational purposes (swimming, boating, fishing), many people have continued to use the Ponds. The barriers will be removed if two consecutive weekly samples show algae counts of less than 70,000 per milliliter. The counts this year have been significantly less than last year but still above this limit, so the advisory has been in place since the middle of July.

While the Town is putting up barriers at these two locations, there are
other locations for which the Town does not have jurisdiction and there
are a number of residents with docks or other ways of obtaining access
to West Monponsett Pond. The Town will not be patrolling West Monponsett Pond, ticketing or fining anyone, but wanted to discourage residents and non-residents from using the Pond due to health concerns.

East Monponsett Pond will continue to be open for all uses.

If you (or anyone else) has questions, please contact me.

Thanks,

Charlie Seelig

Richard Cullen Art
Halifax resident Maureen Kingston has placed a collection of her father's artwork on display in the Community Room of the Holmes Public Library through October.
At the age of 43, her late father, Richard Cullen, began his journey into creating art. After beginning with pencil drawing, pastels, and watercolor, he found his medium with oil paint.

Over the course of 40 years, he amassed a collection of hundreds of canvases. A feat made all the more extraordinary by the fact that, as a child of 7, he completely lost the vision of his left eye.

"As a resident of Melvin Village, New Hampshire and, later, of Halifax, Mass., he saw beauty that the rest of us would have overlooked," his daughter writes in her description of the exhibit.

The show may be viewed during regular library hours except when children's programs are in session. Library hours are Mon & Wed, 12-8; Tues, Thurs., Fri., 10-5; Sat. 10-2.
