Historical Tidbit:  Dandelion  -  A Weed You Can Eat

Yes, we call them a weed, but they were an early spring treat in the early 1900's.

This natural food was used in recipes to add a different kind of taste. Children would be sent out to pick and then the stem and blossom would be plucked from the greens and stewed on the stovetop. It was a delicious dish served with vinegar for a sauce. The dandelion greens are somewhat like spinach when cooked. The root was also used as an addition to salads and an extract could be made to make tea, coffee and wine.

A number of my family members would talk about the "stewed greens" and wine made with dandelions they had picked. I know one of their favorite fields to pick them in was on the east end of Plymouth Street at the Plympton line.

China Town Hall Event
Dear Colleagues:

Bridgewater State University has been selected by the National Committee on US-China Relations as one of the institutions to host the annual China Town Hall, a national day of programming involving about 75 cities in the United States. US-China Relations is a critical topic affecting us all in the 21st Century. We are honored to participate in this program of national dialogue.

The event will be held at the Dana Mohler-Faria Mathematics and Science Center 120 Auditorium, on Monday, October 5th, from 6 to 8:30 pm.

China Town Hall program will consider Chinese Education and Chinese economy. Vanessa Fong from Amherst College will speak in the first hour on How Chinese Citizens Pursue Upward Mobility in China and Worldwide. Following our discussion on Chinese education, we will open a live webcast about What China's Investment in the United States Mean for American Workers, Communities, and the Economy. The webcast features Robert Rubin, former Secretary of the Treasury; Sheldon Day, Mayor of Thomasville, Alabama, and Daniel Rosen, Founding Partner of Rhodium Group. Steve Orlins, President of the National Committee on US-China Relations, one of our co-sponsors for the program, will moderate the discussion.

The event is open to the public. Faculty are encouraged to bring their classes to attend. Please forward to others who might be interested in this event. The event is co-organized by the Minnock Center for International Engagement and the Asian Studies Program. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information.

East Bridgewater Woman Raises Awareness for Alzheimer's

Lori DuVerger, pictured here with her mother, participated in the South Shore Walk to End Alzheimer'sŪ on Saturday, September 19, at Pilgrim Memorial State Park, Plymouth.

DuVerger and her boyfriend Art of 10 years both have mothers living with Alzheimer's and both are devoted caregivers. Lori's mother is still living at home with her
84-year-old father.  She visits to help care for her mother while her father continues to work full time.  Art and Lori both visit his mother every other day in the nursing home where she resides.

DuVerger and her boyfriend also have aunts with an Alzheimer's diagnosis.  With the challenges that they face and the prevalence in both of their lives, DuVerger knew that she wanted to do something, so she started a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's.

"It's so hard to see the same people who took care of you slowly fade into their own world," said DuVerger. "We need a cure."

"If we are to be successful in finding effective treatments for Alzheimer's Disease, we will need thousands of people to commit to raising public awareness," said Jim Wessler, president/CEO of the Alzheimer's Association, MA/NH Chapter.  "The money raised by the Walk to End Alzheimer's is critical to our fight against this disease.  We are grateful to each person who makes a commitment to participate by walking, donating or volunteering."

More than 5 million people in America are living with Alzheimer's.  The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research.  For information or to sign up to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's,

"When we tackle obstacles, we find hidden reserves of courage and resilience we did not know we had. And it is only when we are faced with failure do we realize that these resources were always there within us. We only need to find them and move on with our lives."
~A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Here's a toast to all the resilient men & women, who figure out a solution to the problem... and keep on plugging away, with a smile on their face and grit in their teeth.
