Buzz Around West Bridgewater
NEW WBMSHS RIBBON CUTTING
Spirits were high on a glorious sunny day Saturday during the official ribbon-cutting of the new West Bridgewater Middle-Senior High School. Hundreds gathered to hear presentations and tour the new building, led by student volunteers.

"Welcome to the new West Bridgewater High School," said Superintendent Patty Oakley by way of greeting the crowd. "This is an exciting day for all of us. It's been a long time in coming but so worth the wait!" said Oakley, who thanked the School Committee, School Building Committee, and many others for their time and hard work on the new school project.
"Flansburgh Architects designed an unbelievable building for our students," said Oakley. "They did an unbelievable job taking our vision into this building," said Oakley.
"CTA, our general contractors, were here day in and day out, and they got us into the building on time!" cheered Oakley.
She praised the Mass School Building Authority for accepting West Bridgewater's application into the grant program. "They foot the bill for more than 50% of this project and we could not have done this without them," said Oakley.
Superintendent Oakley praised special guest former State Rep. Christine Canavan, who was "instrumental in helping us get this building for the people of West Bridgewater."

"Most of all, 'thank you' to the tax payers of West Bridgewater for putting your trust in us to complete this building," said Oakley. "To the people of West Bridgewater, this is your building," said Oakley. "It is for your students and you residents and as a community building for you to use."

Oakley explained that the completed school building met three tenets for a 21st-century education designed at the outset:
1) to have a collegiate look and feel
2) to have flexible and adaptable spaces that can change over time
3) to retain a small school feel but provide big school opportunities

School Building Chairman Gary Keith praised the class of 2015 for their "taking one for the team" during construction this past year, where "every game was an away game."

School Committee member Susan Sullivan praised the community for their financial and emotional support throughout the process of the new building approval, design, and construction.
Her advice to students now and in the future? "This was built for you," said Sullivan. "Respect it, and use every resource and structure to become the most successful person you can be."
Selectman Nancy Maloney cheered to the crowd, "Once again-West is best!" She praised the patience and hard work of "hundreds and hundreds of people" for the realization of the long-time vision of a new school. "Our town has always supported our schools," said Maloney, "and this school reflects our town's progressive approach to providing for our children."

Mass School Building Authority Executive Director Jack McCarthy stressed the partnership between his office and the town. "We really try to be partners and help with problems early on," said McCarthy, "and we're so glad we earned the trust of West Bridgewater that you've reached out to us whenever there's a problem." McCarthy shared a favorite quote of a colleague that proved fitting for the occasion. "Teamwork makes the dream work," said McCarthy.

"It is my honor and privilege to serve as your principal of the West Bridgewater Middle-Senior High School," said Mark Bodwell. Now in his sixth year in the role, Bodwell said this is his 19th year working in West Bridgewater schools.
"I've always said we have amazing and talented students, a dedicated and professional staff, and supportive parents and community," said Bodwell, "and now this new building completes the package." Bodwell shared with the crowd that in talking with students, "they love it already!"
"All classrooms are 850 square feet, and the science classrooms are 1400 square feet," said Bodwell. "We have interactive spaces, a language lab, courtyard, robotics lab, our new school store called the Wildcat Den, recycling stations and a variety of furniture," said Bodwell. Other highlights include the state-of-the-art auditorium, bright and spacious cafeteria, and spacious gymnasium. During the tours, community members were also able to enjoy seeing trophies earned over the years and a special "Retro Room" designed to house treasures and artifacts over the 50+ years of school life in the previous building. Hundreds divided into mini-groups to celebrate the new middle-senior high school ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday and tour the new building.

"It's so much bigger - especially the auditorium and the gym," said high school junior Colleen Daly. "I like that it's so much nicer and cleaner," said Daly. When asked about her favorite feature of the new middle-senior high school, flute-player Daly was clear: "the band room and band lockers!"

A number of senior citizens were impressed with the collegiate look and feel of the building and paused to explore the music lab, open-space common areas, and larger classrooms as well as the balconied auditorium.
"The community has always been there for us and we greatly appreciate it," said Principal Mark Bodwell.
"As a member of the School Building Committee, I was impressed with the process and professionalism and I'm quite sure the town got the best for their money with this project," said Jim Kjelgaard.
"Thank you to the town of West Bridgewater for allowing us to fulfill our dream of this project," said School Committee member Susan Sullivan.

                                  "School on Wheels"

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) was founded in 2004 by Cheryl Opper, teacher and child advocate, after reading a magazine article about Agnes Stevens, the founder of School on Wheels of California.  Cheryl was inspired to bring the one-on-one academic program to Massachusetts to support children struggling to stay on track in school while experiencing homelessness.  She started SOWMA out of her home in Easton, where she trained community volunteer tutors at her kitchen table.  Cheryl worked with local universities to recruit her first tutors.  Her basement was filled with backpacks and school supplies.  Community volunteers came together to prepare the backpacks for the children.  In 2004, SOWMA worked with 20 children a week in two family shelters.  SOWMA now provides customized services for over 200-plus students a week in grades K through 12 at 15 program sites, as well as 35 college students currently enrolled at 12 different schools throughout New England
School on Wheels of Massachusetts is the third program in the country.  We are primarily privately funded through individuals, civic organizations, businesses and foundations.

The program is open to the public and admission is free.
Light refreshments will be served.
Students and Teacher Piece Together Creative Fundraiser
Fifth grade teacher Deb Holland makes fundraising a personal endeavor for the Howard School students who will participate in Nature's Classroom this year. This year's sixth graders each decorated a 6-inch quilt square at the close of their fifth grade school year.
"Over the summer I sewed it together to create the 6th grade Signature Quilt," said Holland. "The money raised benefits Nature's Classroom," said Holland.
Here is what some of the sixth grade students had to say about their quilt project:
"I like seeing the whole quilt together and seeing what everyone drew," said Eva.
"It was cool how everyone had something different," said Christian.
"I liked how every square had people's thoughts on it," said Alex. "I liked the fact that you made your own square! Also, it was fun to see what everybody drew. I'm looking forward to see how much money it raises for Nature's Classroom," said Emily.
The raffle quilt will be on display in the Howard School lobby, and students are selling raffle tickets. Tickets are $1 each, seven for $5 or ten for $20.Like us on Facebook

West Bridgewater CULTURAL COUNCIL

Proposals for community oriented arts, humanities, and science projects due October 15, 2015

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council has set an October 15th postmark deadline for organizations, schools, and for individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community.

According to Council spokesperson Joan McAndrew, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in West Bridgewater  ~ including exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.
The West Bridgewater Cultural Council will also entertain proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for school-age children to attend cultural field trips.

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth.  The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community based projects in the arts, sciences, and humanities every year.  The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.
For specific guidelines and complete information on the West Bridgewater Cultural Council, contact Joan McAndrew at jnmcandrew5@gmail.com.  Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program is available online at www.mass-culture.org.

West Bridgewater Public LIbrary's Newest Exhibit
"Bodie Ghost Town - State of Arrested Decay"
on Display Through October 31

Come to the Galleria at the Library to view the new photography exhibit on the town of Bodie, California, by West Bridgewater resident, Joe Kennedy. Bodie is an original mining town from the late 1800's that's in a state of "arrested decay," meaning the buildings are protected, but not restored. It stands today as a genuine gold mining ghost town.
The exhibit will run until the end of October.  The "town" is maintained by the California State Parks System.  Old Main Street in Bodie was said to be nearly one-mile long with traffic that was continuous and enlivening!  The streets are quiet now.

Bodie still has its wicked climate, but with the possible exception of an occasional ghostly visitor, its badmen are all in their graves. Only about five percent of the buildings it contained during its 1880s heyday still remain. Today, it stands just as time, fire and the elements have left it -- a genuine California gold-mining ghost town. Designated a state historic park in 1962, it is now maintained in a state of "arrested decay."

Thanks to Joe Kennedy for the use of these photos.

"When we tackle obstacles, we find hidden reserves of courage and resilience we did not know we had. And it is only when we are faced with failure do we realize that these resources were always there within us. We only need to find them and move on with our lives."
~A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Here's a toast to all the resilient men & women, who figure out a solution to the problem... and keep on plugging away, with a smile on their face and grit in their teeth.
