The Bridgewater-Raynham Special Education Parents Advisory Council (BR-SEPAC)
Family Special Education Night
Friday, October 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Laliberte Elementary School,
 777 Pleasant St, Raynham, MA.

Parents can connect with other parents and gather information from representatives of local special education service providers. School age children can enjoy arts and crafts, gym activities, and a movie while being supervised by volunteers. A raffle will be held to raise funds for the BR-SEPAC.

The BR-SEPAC is made up of parents that represent about 850 children with special needs within the Bridgewater-Raynham School district.  The BR-SEPAC works collaboratively with the Bridgewater-Raynham Public Schools and Bridgewater-Raynham School Committee to provide support and information for parents, school personnel, and the community about disabilities and the special education process. The Bridgewater-Raynham SEPAC accomplishes this through regular meetings, workshops, presentations, and special events. The meeting is free and open to all.  For more information, visit our website: brsepac.org or email kwaskiel@hotmail.com.

Thank you!

Historical Tidbit:  Dandelion  -  A Weed You Can Eat

Yes, we call them a weed, but they were an early spring treat in the early 1900's.

This natural food was used in recipes to add a different kind of taste. Children would be sent out to pick and then the stem and blossom would be plucked from the greens and stewed on the stovetop. It was a delicious dish served with vinegar for a sauce. The dandelion greens are somewhat like spinach when cooked. The root was also used as an addition to salads and an extract could be made to make tea, coffee and wine.

A number of my family members would talk about the "stewed greens" and wine made with dandelions they had picked. I know one of their favorite fields to pick them in was on the east end of Plymouth Street at the Plympton line.

South Shore Hospital's Youth Health Connection
suggests the book:  "The Mindful Teen" by
Dzung X. Vo, MD, FAAP as a great resource for helping our stressed out teens.

 Christine O'Shaughnessy calls it
"the book for teenagers to have on hand to reference when difficult circumstances or emotions arise in their life. It will teach the reader how to stay in touch with their true authentic self even in the midst of stressful situations. "It is beautifully written in a language that teens & tweens will easily understand with personal stories they can directly identify with. Dr. Vo provides easy instructions to follow for a variety of meditation and mindfulness practices with readily available downloads to guide the reader."

In this world of many stresses and many influences, every teenager (and adult) needs a toolbox of ways to handle situations. Mindfulness and meditation have long been understood to be a way to still a racing mind and help handle hard situations.

RAYNHAM CULTURAL COUNCIL SEEKS FUNDING PROPOSALS

The Raynham Cultural Council is inviting organizations, schools and individuals to apply for grants that support community oriented arts, humanities, and science programs in Raynham and neighboring communities.

According to Council spokesperson Dr. Leigh Kozak, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities -- including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.

The Raynham Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.

This year, the Raynham Cultural Council will distribute at least $4300 in grants. Our application postmark deadline is October 15, 2015. Previously funded projects include MFA Library Pass, Raynham Reads, Concerts at the Stone Church, and RAVE school programs.

For specific guidelines and complete information on the Raynham Cultural Council, contact the Council at raynhamculturalcouncil@gmail.com. Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program are available online at www.mass-culture.org/lcc_public.aspx
