East Bridgewater Woman Raises Awareness for Alzheimer's

Lori DuVerger, pictured here with her mother, participated in the South Shore Walk to End Alzheimer'sŪ on Saturday, September 19, at Pilgrim Memorial State Park, Plymouth.

DuVerger and her boyfriend Art of 10 years both have mothers living with Alzheimer's and both are devoted caregivers. Lori's mother is still living at home with her
84-year-old father.  She visits to help care for her mother while her father continues to work full time.  Art and Lori both visit his mother every other day in the nursing home where she resides.

DuVerger and her boyfriend also have aunts with an Alzheimer's diagnosis.  With the challenges that they face and the prevalence in both of their lives, DuVerger knew that she wanted to do something, so she started a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer's.

"It's so hard to see the same people who took care of you slowly fade into their own world," said DuVerger. "We need a cure."

"If we are to be successful in finding effective treatments for Alzheimer's Disease, we will need thousands of people to commit to raising public awareness," said Jim Wessler, president/CEO of the Alzheimer's Association, MA/NH Chapter.  "The money raised by the Walk to End Alzheimer's is critical to our fight against this disease.  We are grateful to each person who makes a commitment to participate by walking, donating or volunteering."

More than 5 million people in America are living with Alzheimer's.  The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research.  For information or to sign up to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer's,

Historical Tidbit:  East Bridgewater Common Historic District

The East Bridgewater Common Historic District encompasses the historic town center of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

The district is centered on the town common, which was established in 1721, and radiates along Central Street away from the common.  The oldest houses in the district date to 1703, and the Central Cemetery is also known to have been in use by that time.  The First Parish Church was built in 1794 and extensively restyled in the 1850s.  Town offices are now housed in the estate house of Aaron Hobart, built in the 1850s in the Italianate style.

The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on
May 12, 1999.

South Shore Hospital's Youth Health Connection
suggests the book:  "The Mindful Teen" by Dzung X. Vo, MD, FAAP, as a great resource for helping our stressed out teens.

Christine O'Shaughnessy calls it "the book for teenagers to have on hand to reference when difficult circumstances or emotions arise in their life.  It will teach the reader how to stay in touch with their true authentic self even in the midst of stressful situations."  It is beautifully written in a language that teens & tweens will easily understand with personal stories they can directly identify with.  Dr. Vo provides easy instructions to follow for a variety of meditation and mindfulness practices with readily available downloads to guide the reader."

In this world of many stresses and many influences, every teenager (and adult) needs a toolbox of ways to handle situations. Mindfulness and meditation have long been understood to be a way to still a racing mind and help handle hard situations.

BOKS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Many of our current 5th graders have followed the BOKS (Build Our Kids' Success, powered by Reebok) program since we piloted it at Central School. Two of our parent volunteers had to move on, so we are looking for at least one more to keep this program running.
The program runs for 6 weeks, Tuesdays and/or Thursdays starting at 7:20AM and you're out the door by 8:10.
Anyone interested in helping, please call or text Cheryl Pino at 508-331-3739.
