Buzz Around West Bridgewater

West Bridgewater Public LIbrary's Newest Exhibit
"Bodie Ghost Town - State of Arrested Decay"
on Display Through October 31

Come to the Galleria at the Library to view the new photography exhibit on the town of Bodie, California, by West Bridgewater resident, Joe Kennedy. Bodie is an original mining town from the late 1800's that's in a state of "arrested decay," meaning the buildings are protected, but not restored. It stands today as a genuine gold mining ghost town.
The exhibit will run until the end of October.  The "town" is maintained by the California State Parks System.  Old Main Street in Bodie was said to be nearly one-mile long with traffic that was continuous and enlivening!  The streets are quiet now.

Bodie still has its wicked climate, but with the possible exception of an occasional ghostly visitor, its badmen are all in their graves. Only about five percent of the buildings it contained during its 1880s heyday still remain. Today, it stands just as time, fire and the elements have left it -- a genuine California gold-mining ghost town. Designated a state historic park in 1962, it is now maintained in a state of "arrested decay."

Thanks to Joe Kennedy for the use of these photos.

Historical Tidbit: Cyrus Alger

Cyrus Alger was born in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on November 11, 1781, and learned metal casting from his father.  He became an iron founder, established his business in Easton, and in 1809 moved to South Boston, where he founded the works that by 1817 were known as the South Boston Iron Company.

He was one of the best practical metallurgists of his time and devised numerous improvements in the construction of time fuses for bomb shells and grenades.   He supplied the government with cannon balls for the War of 1812, designed the first cylinder stoves in 1822, and in 1834 his works made the first rifled gun in America. The mortar "Columbiad," the largest gun of cast iron that had then been made in the United States, was cast under his personal supervision.

As an active member in the community, Alger paid to have sidewalks paved and trees planted.  He served as a member of the city council during the first year of its existence, and was elected alderman in 1824 and 1827.   He introduced the 10-hour day to South Boston Industry.  When he died, stores closed along the route of his funeral and factories all over South Boston shut down.   Today, Alger cannons sit in front of Town Halls and on village greens all over the country, and are bought and sold by collectors as pieces of American history.

South Shore Hospital's Youth Health Connection
suggests the book:  "The Mindful Teen" by Dzung X. Vo, MD, FAAP, as a great resource for helping our stressed out teens.

Christine O'Shaughnessy calls it "the book for teenagers to have on hand to reference when difficult circumstances or emotions arise in their life. It will teach the reader how to stay in touch with their true authentic self even in the midst of stressful situations. "It is beautifully written in a language that teens & tweens will easily understand with personal stories they can directly identify with. Dr. Vo provides easy instructions to follow for a variety of meditation and mindfulness practices with readily available downloads to guide the reader."

In this world of many stresses and many influences, every teenager (and adult) needs a toolbox of ways to handle situations. Mindfulness and meditation have long been understood to be a way to still a racing mind and help handle hard situations.

"School on Wheels"

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) was founded in 2004 by Cheryl Opper, teacher and child advocate, after reading a magazine article about Agnes Stevens, the founder of School on Wheels of California. Cheryl was inspired to bring the one-on-one academic program to Massachusetts to support children struggling to stay on track in school while experiencing homelessness.  She started SOWMA out of her home in Easton, where she trained community volunteer tutors at her kitchen table. Cheryl worked with local universities to recruit her first tutors. Her basement was filled with backpacks and school supplies. Community volunteers came together to prepare the backpacks for the children.  In 2004, SOWMA worked with 20 children a week in two family shelters.  SOWMA now provides customized services for over 200-plus students a week in grades K through 12 at 15 program sites, as well as 35 college students currently enrolled at 12 different schools throughout New England
School on Wheels of Massachusetts is the third program in the country. We are primarily privately funded through individuals, civic organizations, businesses and foundations.

The program is open to the public and admission is free.
Light refreshments will be served.

West Bridgewater CULTURAL COUNCIL

Proposals for community oriented arts, humanities, and science projects due October 15, 2015

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council has set an October 15 postmark deadline for organizations, schools, and for individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community.

According to Council spokesperson Joan McAndrew, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in West Bridgewater  ~ including exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.
The West Bridgewater Cultural Council will also entertain proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for school-age children to attend cultural field trips.

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth.  The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community based projects in the arts, sciences, and humanities every year.  The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.
For specific guidelines and complete information on the West Bridgewater Cultural Council, contact Joan McAndrew at jnmcandrew5@gmail.com.  Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program is available online at www.mass-culture.org.
