Historical Tidbit:

The North Parish of Bridgewater in early 1819 formed a committee petitioning the General Court of Massachusetts for a division of the town, listing two specific concerns. The first concern was that the area and population of Bridgewater was getting too big and the expense of time and travel made attending town meetings difficult so far from their homes. The second concern was that the meetinghouse was in disrepair and lacked sufficient size for the whole town to meet and transact their business. North Parish would be much better served by forming their own town.

A smaller group in North Parish petitioned against the division believing such reasons and arguments presented for the division were unjustified. They also wished if the petition for division were passed, they and their estates would be exempt and remain part of Bridgewater.

The town of Bridgewater itself also petitioned the General Court expressing regret and surprise regarding the division. They disagreed with the alleged sufferings expressed of road conditions and time of travel along with the size and condition of the town's meetinghouse. Their opinion, generally speaking, was the conditions in Bridgewater were uncommonly good compared to most towns throughout the state. Their main concern was that this division would lead to the division of the whole town!

After much debate and consideration over the next two years, on June 15, 1821, the State Senate and House passed the bill granting North Parish incorporation. The new town of North Bridgewater celebrated its first town meeting Independence Day 1821. The open expression of growing pains within Bridgewater had now been ushered in by the incorporation of the North.

The name was changed from North Bridgewater to Brockton in 1874.

Auditions for a Regional Community Theater Production
of  Roald Dahl's "The Witches"
  With Artists From Suburbia,
directed by Andrew Child

Friday, September 25, and Saturday, September 26,
from 7:00 - 9:00pm
 St. Joseph the Worker Church
 1 Maquan Street, Hanson

Interested performers should prepare 30 seconds - 1 minute of a monologue of their choosing and be prepared to learn a brief movement combination and read from the script.

Artists from Suburbia, a new collective that strives to put the "community" back into community theatre is looking for a group of eight talented actors/ clowns/ puppeteers of any age or ability to tell the delightfully wacky story of The Witches adapted by David Wood through dialogue, creative movement, and puppetry.

Rehearsals will (tentatively) be held on Mondays 7:00-9:00, Thursdays 7:00-9:00, and Sundays 1:00-4:00 in Brockton, Massachusetts (just over the Whitman town line). However, the full cast will not be expected to attend all rehearsals.  Any additional dates and times may be worked out to incorporate everyone's schedules. Tech week will begin on Sunday, November 15.

Performances will be at The Center at Sachem Rock in East Bridgewater on Friday, November 20, at 7:00; Saturday, November 21, at 7:00; and Sunday, November 22, at 2:00. Performances will be free and open to the public.

This production is being graciously funded by the East Bridgewater Cultural Council. We hope you will join us and become a part of our premier production! Please feel free to email artistsfromsuburbia@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

West Bridgewater CULTURAL COUNCIL

Proposals for community oriented arts, humanities, and science projects due October 15, 2015

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council has set an October 15 postmark deadline for organizations, schools, and for individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community.

According to Council spokesperson Joan McAndrew, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in West Bridgewater  ~ including exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.
The West Bridgewater Cultural Council will also entertain proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for school-age children to attend cultural field trips.

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth.  The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year.  The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.
For specific guidelines and complete information on the West Bridgewater Cultural Council, contact Joan McAndrew at jnmcandrew5@gmail.com.  Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program is available online at www.mass-culture.org.

Goldfinch & Sunflowers - Mary Wright Julius

Hidden Hummingbird - Mary Wright Julius

"I love to watch the birds and butterflies that come to the late-summer garden. Flocks of grackles fill the trees and empty the feeders every day as they get ready to journey South. The hummingbirds are gathering nectar from the bee balm and the butterfly bush is a favorite of the black swallowtail. The yellow goldfinches are busy pulling every seed from the sunflowers. Occasionally, the cooper's hawk shows up at the feeders and all the birds scatter until he leaves. September is a time of transition, of preparing for colder weather and the first frost, and the birds know it's coming."

Thank you, Mary, for sharing these beautiful captures of life!
