Historical Tidbit:  "MUD SEASON"

Our present day thoroughfare running east and west is known as Plymouth Street (Rt 106).
It was first identified on a Latham Map as having been established in 1667.  It was then known as the Bridgewater Trail, the best road that connected Halifax and Bridgewater.
An 1875 record states that the road from the Plymouth line " was to be crowned 1-1/2 feet in the center and all the upland."
It went on to say "The best materials found within the limits of the locations, to be reserved for a dressing, so as to form a hard and durable surface over the whole extent of the road bed.
Side and gutters and culverts are to be converted when necessary to carry off surface water."
sue and her plant

We may complain today about our "potholes," but at least we have "a hard and durable surface" to travel on.

Respectfully submitted,
Sue Basile

Painting Exhibition

The Bridgewater Public Library will feature an exhibit of various oil paintings by Rob Franco (www.robfranco.com) in the Flora T. Little Gallery.  The exhibition will be on display during the months of September and October.

Rob is trained as an illustrator in the United States Air Force and continued as a graphic artist in the Boston area.  A fascination with the ocean and other bodies of water continues to inspire his work. Rob enjoys searching the New England and Eastern Shore coastlines to find boats and wildlife such as the Wild Assateague Island ponies, birds and sea creatures to paint.
His first visit to Assateague Island National Seashore on the Eastern Maryland coast to see the Wild Assateague ponies was a truly emotional and inspiring experience.  Many return visits allowed him to study and capture the intimate moments and interactions of these beautiful wild creatures.  One particular family band consisting of a six-week-old filly, her stallion father, mother and two additional mares became the inspiration of this body of work.

An Artist's "Meet and Greet" will be held on Saturday, September 19th at 10:30 a.m. This will include an Assateague Island Pony presentation plus Rob's paintings of the ponies and his experience on the island.   The public is invited to attend.

Restoration Underway!

M. O'Connor Construction of West Roxbury began work in May on a $5.4 million restoration of the stately, 154-year-old building that overlooks the town common's southern end. It will become the new Town Hall when work is complete in about 14 months.

COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE (CPC) REORGANIZES -ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN. At its regularly scheduled meeting on August 20, 2015, the CPC elected Harry Bailey, Jr., as its new chair. Mr. Bailey, the Conservation Commission appointee to the CPC and Vice Chair of the CPC going into last night's meeting, ran the reorganization, which saw newly appointed citizen-at-large Melissa Desjardins elected as Vice Chair; and Historical Commission appointee to the CPC, Robert Wood, re-elected as Treasurer

The Community Preservation Committee oversees the implementation of the CPA in Bridgewater (enacted in 2005 --- celebrating its 10th anniversary this year). They collect about $450,000/year from Bridgewater residents collected from homeowners thru a property tax assessment, and then allocate the funds for preservation projects.

The current renovation of the Academy Building is the largest use of CPA funds dispersed by the Bridgewater CPC since the CPA was adopted by the citizens of Bridgewater several years ago. Congratulations to Harry, Melissa and Robert on your election. The reorganization became necessary when Marilee Kenny Hunt was elected as Town Clerk in April.
