Historical Tidbit:  EARTHQUAKE
A story from Hilda (Morton) Thomas 1899 - 1991

"The Eastern states have seldom been troubled with earthquakes worthy of notice, except in one case.
November 18, 1755, was a day long to be remembered in the annals of New England for a remarkable earthquake.  The convulsion was greater and more terrifying than ever experienced before or since in this part of the globe.  It is said that the ground swelled and rolled like the waves of the sea.
The evening was clear and serene, not the least current of air could be felt to move.  The full moon shone in all it mildness, and all things seemed to be silent and in thoughtful meditation.
Suddenly, the undulations of the air accounted the approaching awful catastrophe.
The ground rose so abruptly and so suddenly the leaves of the forest rose from ground and floated about in the air.
The first shock was followed by two others, but they were comparatively light and did no harm.  The first shock burst in several places in the area and honed out great quantities of earth and water.
In one case, it raised a house so high that a cradle with a child in it was thrown from one side of the room to the other.
This quake was so convulsive it filled the minds of both man and beast with consternation."

WEST BRIDGEWATER PUBLIC LIBRARY TO IMPROVE WI-FI

The Library Board of Trustees has moved to improve the Wi-Fi service within the library. As the demand for more Wi-Fi access has increased, the number of complaints from patrons has increased for a more uniform and reliable service. With limited funds, the Board will try to improve the service.
For the past few years, the library server has made an effort to provide service to the adjacent parking lot to accommodate residents who may be waiting for patrons or may have other "short time" needs. Meanwhile, there developed "dead" areas within the library that were a source of annoyance to patrons and staff. With the help of outside technical support, we hope to solve this problem.
First, the "boosters" that currently serve the parking areas have been moved to critical areas within the building, and some of those currently inside have been relocated to eliminate all dead areas. This should address our major concern. Second, the entire Wi-Fi service is divided into two groups, one of which is turned on and off simultaneously with the patron computers each day in an effort to save energy. The other group, which includes the public meeting room, will function 24/7 to accommodate other activities in the building.
The Library Board of Trustees would like to thank Mr. Mike Aucoin of Charlie's Computers of Bridgewater for his expertise and welcomes public comment and input on these changes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
Tests Showed Coliform Bacteria in West Bridgewater Water

Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for drinking water contaminants. We took 15 samples to test for the presence of coliform bacteria during August 2015. Two of our samples or 13% showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than 1 sample per month (5 percent of samples) may do so.

What should I do?  You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.

People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.

What does this mean?
This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.

Usually, coliforms are a sign that there could be a problem with the system's treatment or distribution system (pipes). Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. We did not find any of these bacteria in our subsequent testing, and further testing shows that this problem has been resolved.

What happened? What was done?
We were unable to conduct our routine flushing program last year because we painted the 5 million gallon water tank. We also suffered a catastrophic failure of our pumping equipment. We had to wait for repairs before we could begin flushing. Once the repairs were completed, it then snowed before Thanksgiving, which meant we could not flush the system properly/safely (without ice on roads, etc.). In the spring this year it was very warm early on, so we were exceeding 1 million gallons a day. We did not want to burden the system, so we did not flush the system at that time, either.

What we have done is increased our chlorine residual in the system to disinfect our water. We will be flushing the water system early in September.

West Bridgewater CULTURAL COUNCIL SEEKS FUNDING PROPOSALS
Proposals for community oriented arts, humanities, and science projects due October 15, 2015.

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council has set an October 15 postmark deadline for organizations, schools, and for individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community.

According to Council spokesperson Joan McAndrew, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in West Bridgewater  ~ including exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.
The West Bridgewater Cultural Council will also entertain proposals from schools and youth groups through the PASS Program, which provides subsidies for school-age children to attend cultural field trips.

The West Bridgewater Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351cities and towns in the Commonwealth.  The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding
network in the nation, supporting thousands of community based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year.  The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.
For specific guidelines and complete information on the West Bridgewater Cultural Council, contact Joan McAndrew at jnmcandrew5@gmail.com.  Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program is available online at www.mass-culture.org.

New Memories Soon to be Made

After decades of service, the old junior-senior high school has become one with the histories, yet its successor is about to take up the mantle and create new memories that will endure for years to come.

Here is a little peek at what the students will experience. The Wildcat Cafeteria and the auditorium are featured, courtesy of  West Bridgewater Television.  Our best wishes to the students and the staff in this new transition.
