Historical Tidbit: Raynham's Boston Post Cane

On August 2, 1909, Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, Publisher of the Boston Post, a newspaper, forwarded to the Board of Selectmen in 700 towns in New England a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest male citizen of the town, to be used by him as long as he lives (or moves from the town), and at his death handed down to the next oldest citizen of the town.  The cane would belong to the town and not the man who received it.
The canes were all made by J.F. Fradley and Co., a New York manufacturer, from ebony shipped in seven-foot lengths from the Congo in Africa.  They were cut to cane lengths, seasoned for six months, turned on lathes to the right thickness, coated and polished. They had a 14-carat gold head two inches long, decorated by hand, and a ferruled tip.  The head was engraved with the inscription, - Presented by the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of Bridgewater - "To Be Transmitted."  The Board of Selectmen were to be the trustees of the cane and keep it always in the the hands of the oldest citizen.

In 1924, Mr. Grozier died, and the Boston Post was taken over by his son, Richard, who failed to continue his father's success and eventually died in a mental hospital.   At one time the Boston Post was considered the nation's leading standard-sized newspaper in circulation. Competition from other newspapers, radio and television contributed to the Post's decline and it went out of business in 1957.

The custom of the Boston Post Cane took hold in those towns lucky enough to have canes.  As years went by, some of the canes were lost,  taken out of town and not returned to the Selectmen, or destroyed by accident.  In 1930, after considerable controversy, eligibility for the cane was opened to women as well.

Raynham continues the tradition. Their original cane is currently sealed in a glass display case at the senior center. Recipients receive a plaque.

February 2013: Lois Reed, age 102, received the cane.  According to Council on Aging director Liz Moura, Lois was born the year Fenway Park was built and the Titanic sank, 1912.

Volunteers Needed for Kindergarten Bus Routes

Volunteers are needed on every bus route that has kindergarten children for the first four days of kindergarten: Wednesday 9/9, Thursday 9/10, Friday 9/11 and Monday 9/14. For the morning routes, we meet at 7:45 to board the buses (back of Raynham Middle School). The afternoon routes meet at 3:00 in the Merrill School Cafeteria. After the route is finished, the bus driver will return you to where you started.

This program is important to the children, the parents, and bus drivers. As RAVE Volunteers, our job is to help any child who is having difficulty riding a school bus for the first time. Sometimes just a little conversation is all a child needs to feel comfortable. This allows the bus drivers to concentrate on learning their stops and also can ease the worrisome mind of a parent putting their child on the bus for the first time. Please consider riding with us this year, since we have many slots to fill, Even if you ride just once, that would help greatly!

Cara Peters is the chairperson for this program. Her contact information is listed below. We do not have the exact bus routes yet, but they will probably be similar to last year. If you can ride for us and would like a certain bus route, please let Cara know. She will also need to know which days and times you are available to ride. If you do not know the bus # that you want, let us know the street name and we can figure it out. We will try to accommodate as many requests as possible. Please respond quickly if you would like a certain route, as some of the routes are very popular. Also, it would be helpful if you let Cara know if you are willing to ride any bus route. Last year we had high school students help with the afternoon routes. If you have a high school student or know of one who would like to ride this year, we would love to have them...and they can get a jump start on their community service hours!

Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers
recycle2.jpg
Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash. In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manor. Dealing with our trash that is too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by roaches and rodents. Also part of waste management is the concept of recycling, an idea vital not only for our environment but also for our economy as well.
Raynham does not have a curbside pick-up service, but employs a transfer station located on 1555 King Philip Street.  Its hours of operation are Tuesday-Thursday, Friday from 7 am to 10:45 am and Saturday from 7 am to 4:15 pm.  They are closed Sunday and Monday.  Yearly permits cost $70, with a $35 half-year option. Additional vehicles at the same address require $10. Sheets of bag tags cost $10 for a sheet of five and are available at many town stores. Further information can be gathered through www.town.raynham.ma.us
