Restoration Underway!

M. O'Connor Construction of West Roxbury began work in May on a $5.4 million restoration of the stately, 154-year-old building that overlooks the town common's southern end. It will become the new Town Hall when work is complete in about 14 months.

COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE (CPC) REORGANIZES -ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN. At its regularly scheduled meeting on August 20, 2015, the CPC elected Harry Bailey, Jr., as its new chair. Mr. Bailey, the Conservation Commission appointee to the CPC and Vice Chair of the CPC going into last night's meeting, ran the reorganization, which saw newly appointed citizen-at-large Melissa Desjardins elected as Vice Chair and Historical Commission appointee to the CPC, Robert Wood, re-elected as Treasurer

The Community Preservation Committee oversees the implementation of the CPA in Bridgewater (enacted in 2005 --- celebrating its 10th anniversary this year). They college about $450,000/year from Bridgewater residents collected from homeowners thru a property tax assessment, and then allocates the funds for preservation projects.

The current renovation of the Academy Building is the largest use of CPA funds dispersed by the Bridgewater CPC since the CPA was adopted by the citizens of Bridgewater several years ago. Congratulations to Harry, Melissa and Robert on your election. The reorganization became necessary when Marilee Kenny Hunt was elected as Town Clerk in April.

Historical Tidbit: Summer Fun

How did you get to the beach in 1900? First of all you did not have to go far. The Nip up on Pleasant Street was only a nickel away by trolley. The trolley began running in Bridgewater in 1897 with service through Bridgewater connecting us to Middleboro, Taunton and Brockton. It also went all the way to Wareham and Nantasket Beach. While the trolley was primarily a means of getting to and from the numerous factories in the area for work, it also have other functions on weekends.
A number of recreation areas were created along the lines with the Nip being one of them. There were two dance halls, small steam boat rides, canoe and row boat rentals, swimming and an ice cream stand. The trolley stopped running in 1928, the dance halls closed before WWII and the ice cream stand closed in the 1950's.

If you did not have the nickel, there were many "swimming holes" around town at the numerous ponds and along the river. It is interesting to note that the first commercial swimming pool was not the one at the college. It was over 100 years ago at the prison for the use of the inmates.

Respectfully submitted, David Moore

Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers
recycle2.jpg
Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash. In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manner. Dealing with our trash that is too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by roaches and rodents. Also part of waste management is the concept of recycling, an idea vital not only for our environment but also for our economy as well.
