A Generous Donation

Photo courtesy of the East Bridgewater H.O.P.E. Facebook site.

This summer the Bridgewater Savings Bank graciously donated one thousand dollars to East Bridgewater H.O.P.E., and their support has been consistent over the years.

H.O.P.E., founded in November of 2011, works with the local community in the education and prevention of the drug epidemic that is plaguing our society. Pictured above are (l-r) Suzanne Catraio, Chief John Cowan, Susan Willis Silva, Shawn Salisbury and Russ Dupuis, Jr.  Our warmest appreciation for the generosity and the work done. Further information on East Bridgewater H.O.P.E. can be found on ebhope.weebly.com

Funds Donated to American Society for
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)

Community Covenant Church recently donated $374.61 to the ASPCA after the church's annual Vacation Bible School.

During August, children who attended Vacation Bible School donated money to support the local ASPCA shelter in Brockton.
Shown in the photograph are several children and volunteers of Community Covenant's program, along with Pastor Donald Olson and ASPCA staff member Joyce, who accepted the funds on behalf of the Animal Protection Center.

Great Job, Kids!  Way to go, taking care to help all of God's creations!

Respectfully submitted, Gabrielle Olson

Historical Tidbit:

A toll for a cookie or a cookie for a toll?

The first turnpike/toll road in this area was chartered in 1804, now known as Bedford Street (rte. 18).
Tolls were collected at a toll-gate or toll-house.  A toll-keeper would collect 25 cents for "every coach or other four wheel carriage, for the conveyance of persons."  Other costs were included for stagecoaches.
          Now for the Cookie part!
In 1930, Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield purchased the old Smith house on Bedford Street; at that time the area was part of East Bridgewater.
Even though they opened in the middle of the depression, the Toll House quickly became known.
People filled the restaurant to get a fine full course meal, elegantly served,  for  only $1.  One day, having run out of baker's chocolate, Ruth substituted pieces of Nestle's semi-sweet chocolate, assuming they would melt.
To her surprise they didn't melt.  More surprisingly, the customers loved the cookies with the chunks of chocolate.  The Wakefield's "Toll House Crunch Cookie" had become one of the greatest single contributions to the American dessert cuisine.  Ruth made a deal with Andrew Nestle, allowing him to print her recipe on their cookie packages.  In return, she received a life time supply of chocolate.
The Wakefields ran the restaurant until 1967. New owners ran it until it closed in 1971. It was destroyed by fire in 1984.
I wonder, on cool clear nights when stars are aligned just right, does a warm scent of sweet chocolate still drift in the air?
~ I wonder as I wander... Robert Lundquist

Garnet Rogers: Summer's End
Garnet Rogers: Summer's End
Admission: $20.00

Born in HamiltonOntario, to parents of Nova Scotian descent, Garnet Rogers spent many hours in front of the old floor model radio listening to Grand Ol' Opry broadcasts and harmonizing with his brother, the late folk legend Stan Rogers. Since then, Garnet has established himself as a formidable solo artist.
His music, like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly sensitive,
and deeply purposeful.

Speaking of Purpose, proceeds from this event will be donated to benefit
The Wounded Warrior Project:
  • To raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members.
  • To help injured service members aid and assist each other.

Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers
image via Wikipedia.

Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash. In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manner.  Wise and experienced ones have learned to equip themselves with dog biscuits to bribe our four-legged friends into acceptance, if not outright friendship. Lifting heavy barrels that are too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by roaches and rodents.  Recycling is also part of waste management, an idea vital not only for our environment but also for our economy as well.

East Bridgewater employs Allied Waste to do curbside pick-ups. The trash must be out by 7 am for its collection and varies on the day by one's location in the town. Recycling pick-up is every other week.
For more information about the schedule and how to sort your trash, contact our Dept of Public Works
