Happy Birthday to the Monponsett Watershed Association

In the three years since its founding in August 23 of 2012, the Monponsett Watershed Association has committed itself to the maintenance and preservation of Monponsett Ponds. As these waters dominate the landscape of Halifax, this is an important and worthy undertaking. A recognized 501(c)3 organization, this all volunteer community group is always open to new membership, with a yearly dues fee of $15. Donations and interested people can mail to PO Box 287, Halifax, MA 02338 or reach the website at www.monponsettwatershed.org. In honor of the organization's third birthday, we are posting a few dynamic pictures one can view from their Facebook site!

Historical Tidbit:

History of the railroad in Halifax
The railroad from Boston to Plymouth started running one train a day in 1845.
When it was surveyed, the original lines went between the area of Pond and Elm Street and the area of Furnace and Elm Street, but the farmers objected fearing that their cattle would be killed.
There is a story that the Fall River Railroad company surveyed a line that went near Baker's Blacksmith Shop (when it was on Old Plymouth St), but the road was never built; it just touched the northeast corner of town.
The residents of Halifax used the Monponsett Station in Hanson.
The photo is a postcard from 1940 showing the Monponsett Station on Monponsett Street in Hanson.
The station was on the South side of the existing tracks, near the Cranland Airport.

Special Town Meeting - Tuesday, September 8

At its meeting on Tuesday, August 11, the Halifax Board of Selectmen voted to hold a special town meeting on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:30pm in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Halifax Elementary School, 464 Plymouth Street. The primary reason for the meeting is to transfer money originally appropriated in May for the first year of a five-year lease-purchase of an aerial firefighting platform/vehicle for the Halifax Fire Department so that it can be used, instead, as a matching share to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant received by the Town in order to purchase this vehicle. The language in the appropriation approved in May was very specific and another vote is needed in order to properly authorize the use of the money as the Town's match to this grant. In addition to this article, there will be an article to use the rest of the money from the original appropriation to reduce the Town's tax rate and an article to transfer money from an article to purchase computer equipment for the Elementary School in order to help purchase a new telephone system. A copy of the warrant is available.

The last day to register in order to be eligible to vote at this special town meeting is Monday, August 31. The Town Clerk's Office at the Halifax Town Hall, 499 Plymouth Street, will be open until 8pm to accommodate those who wish to register.

WATER BAN IN EFFECT
At the May town meeting it was voted to rehab the water tank, which includes painting the inside and outside. Everyone was notified with the first half water bill which was mailed May 25, 2015, that there will be a TOTAL OUTSIDE WATER USE BAN effective September 1, 2015.
We anticipate that this ban will be in effect until November 1, but could extend until December 1, 2015.

We need everyone to abide by this outside water ban.  The tank holds 500,000 gallons of water, which gets us through the weekends when water usage can more than double our usage during the week.  Our daily pumping average is 460,000 gallons.  On the weekends it can increase to 750,000 to 900,000 gallons per day.  The tank will be emptied the first week of September and will not be used again until the project is complete.
We will getting water from Brockton from our Holmes Street interconnection.  This may cause residents to experience a water quality change from time to time.

We need to be sure we have enough water for drinking and fire protection. Everyone needs to abide by the TOTAL OUTSIDE WATER USE BAN.

If you have a well, you may use your well for irrigation. Please be sure to have your well permit number clearly posted in your yard to avoid water department personnel giving you a violation notice. If you have any questions, please call the water department at 781-293-1733. We appreciate everyone's help and will try to complete the project as soon as possible with as little disruption as possible.

Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers.
image via Wikipedia.

Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash. In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manner. Wise and experienced ones have learned to equip themselves with dog biscuits to bribe our four-legged friends into acceptance, if not outright friendship. Lifting heavy barrels that are too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by roaches and rodents. Recycling is also part of waste management, an idea vital not only for our environment but also for our economy as well.

Halifax employs a weekly curbside pick-up with a biweekly recycling service. For the particular times of the week, varying on one's local, the schedule can be found at www.halifax.ma.us/HalifaxMA_SolidWaste/household

Trash bags can be purchased at the following stores: Mobil, Harmony Liquors, Cumberland Farms, Stop & Shop, Lindy's, Tedeschi's, all in Halifax, and Shaw's in Carver. Bags are $3.00 for each 33-gallon bag and $2.30 for each 13-gallon bag.
