Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers
recycle2.jpg
Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash. In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manor. Dealing with our trash that is too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by the roaches and rodents. Also part of waste management is the concept of recycling, an idea vital not only for our environment but for our economy as well.

Raynham does not have a curbside pick-up service but employs a transfer station located on 1555 King Philip Street.  Its hours of operation are Tuesday-Thursday, Friday from 7 am to 10:45 am and Saturday from 7 am to 4:15 pm.  They are closed Sunday and Monday.  Yearly Permits cost $70, with a $35 half-year option. Additional vehicles at the same address require $10. Sheets of bag tags cost $10 for a sheet of five and are available at many town stores. Further information can be gathered through www.town.raynham.ma.us

Historical Tidbit:
DID YOU KNOW?

STEPMOTHERS were sometimes called "mothers-in-laws"?
INFANT once meant any person under 21?
HOUSEKEEPER once meant property owner?
DOMESTIC once meant housewife?
MISTER was applied only to men of wealth and education?
RELIC meant widow?

The custom of wearing a wedding ring on the third
finger of the left hand came from the ancient belief that the nerve in that finger connected directly to the heart.

United Way Announces State Funding

United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc. (UWGAT) on behalf of the South Coast Regional Network to End Homelessness (SoCo) is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of $50,000 in the Massachusetts State budget to facilitate the coordination and implementation of support programs protecting families and individuals experiencing homelessness. SoCo continues to be UWGAT's highly successful income and financial stability initiative, partnering with many Bristol County stakeholders committed to identifying and implementing creative strategies to ending homelessness. This funding is critical for SoCo to continue its unique role, and to provide a template for multi-faceted and coordinated strategies to prevent and end homelessness in and beyond Bristol County.

SoCo continues to provide and promote collaborative leadership at all levels of government and across all sectors to inspire and energize us all to commit to preventing and ending homelessness. Additionally, SoCo hopes by increasing knowledge regarding collaboration and successful interventions, these efforts will in turn strengthen the capacity of public and private organizations which will further foster independence and economic self-sufficiency.

United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton and the South Coast Regional Network to End Homelessness greatly appreciates Senator Michael Rodrigues' (Co-chair of SoCo's Leadership Council) work on adding the funding to the state budget and to all Bristol County legislators for endorsing and supporting this critical funding. Thank you for your vote of confidence.

For more information, contact United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc. at 508-222-2337, visit www.uwgat.org, or follow UWGAT on Facebook and Twitter.
