Buzz Around West Bridgewater

New Memories Soon to be Made

After decades of service, the old junior-senior high school has become one with the histories, yet its successor is about to take up the mantle and create new memories that will endure for years to come.

Here is a little peek at what the students will experience. The Wildcat Cafeteria and the auditorium are featured, courtesy of  West Bridgewater Television.  Our best wishes to the students and the staff in this new transition.

Historical Tidbit: Local Metallurgist

Cyrus Alger was born in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1781, and learned metal casting from his father.  He set up a foundry in  Easton
and in 1809 moved to South Boston.
In 1816, Alger bought from the South Boston Land Association most of the land west of the Dorchester Turnpike.  Here, he built his foundry and made
a name for himself as one of the leading metallurgists of his time.

Alger developed a process for purifying cast iron, producing a much stronger material, and produced the first rifled gun in the nation.  He personally supervised the pouring of the Columbiad, the largest gun to be produced up until that time.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
Tests Showed Coliform Bacteria in West Bridgewater Water

Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for drinking water contaminants. We took 15 samples to test for the presence of coliform bacteria during August, 2015. Two of our samples or 13% showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than 1 sample per month (5 percent of samples) may do so.

What should I do?  You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.

People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.

What does this mean?
This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.

Usually, coliforms are a sign that there could be a problem with the system's treatment or distribution system (pipes). Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. We did not find any of these bacteria in our subsequent testing, and further testing shows that this problem has been resolved.

What happened? What was done?
We were unable to conduct our routine flushing program last year, because we painted the 5 million gallon water tank and then we also suffered a catastrophic failure of our pumping equipment. We had to wait for repairs before we could begin flushing. Once the repairs were completed, it then snowed before Thanksgiving, which meant we could not flush the system properly/safely (without ice on roads, etc.). In the spring this year it was very warm early on, so we were exceeding 1 million gallons a day. We did not want to burden the system, so we did not flush the system then either.

What we have done is increased our chlorine residual in the system, to disinfect our water. We will be flushing the water system early in September.

WEST BRIDGEWATER PUBLIC LIBRARY TO IMPROVE WI-FI

The Library Board of Trustees has moved to improve the Wi-Fi service within the library. As the demand for more Wi-Fi access has increased, the number of complaints from patrons has increased for a more uniform and reliable service. With limited funds, the Board will try to improve the service.
For the past few years the library server has made an effort to provide service to the adjacent parking lot to accommodate residents who may be waiting for patrons or may have other "short time" needs. Meanwhile there developed "dead" areas within the library that were a source of annoyance to patrons and staff. With the help of outside technical support we hope to solve this problem.
First, the "boosters" that currently serve the parking areas have been moved to critical areas within the building and some of those currently inside have been relocated to eliminate all dead areas. This should address our major concern. Second, the entire Wi-Fi service is divided into two groups, one of which is turned on and off simultaneously with the patron computers each day in an effort to save energy. The other group, which includes the public meeting room, will function 24/7 to accommodate other activities in the building.
The Library Board of Trustees would like to thank Mr. Mike Aucoin of Charlie's Computers of Bridgewater for his expertise and welcomes public comment and input on these changes.

Respectfully submitted,
Beth Roll Smith

Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers

recycle2.jpg Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash.

In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manner.

Working with trash that is too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by roaches and rodents. Recycling is also part of waste management, an idea vital not only for our environment but also for our economy as well.

West Bridgewater does not employ curbside delivery.  A refuse Transfer Station is provided for residents to dispose of household trash. Residents must have a sticker purchased from the Town Clerk's office in the Town Hall to use the transfer station.

recycling_girl.jpgOur transfer station is located on 218 Elm Street. Hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 am to 4:30 pm. In order to use the station, one must have a sticker that can be purchased at the Town Clerk's office for $85.00 for one year's service. For further inquiries or information, contact 508-894-1216.
