Buzz Around West Bridgewater
Unsung Heroes: Waste Management Workers

recycle2.jpg Often overlooked by our communities, waste management workers are fundamental for the health and sanitation of our societies. Without their efforts, we would literally be neck-deep in trash.

In the freezing cold, the blistering sun, the soaking rain, pelting snow and lashing winds, they take our refuse and dispose of it in a safe, efficient manor.

Working with trash that is  too often swarming with flies and stinging insects, they assure our communities are not overrun by the roaches and rodents. Recycling is also part of waste management, an idea vital not only for our environment but for our economy as well.

West Bridgewater does not employ curbside delivery.  A refuse Transfer Station is provided for residents to dispose of household trash. Residents must have a sticker purchased from the town clerks office in the Town Hall to use the transfer station.

recycling_girl.jpgOur transfer station is located on 218 Elm Street. Hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 am to 4:30 pm. In order to use the station, one must have a sticker that can be purchased at the town clerk's office for $85.00 for one year's service. For further inquiries or information contact 508-894-1216.

Historical Tidbit:  Cowbells

image via wikipedia.
When I was growing up my  grandfather, Guy Baker, use to call his corner of the world "Cowbell Corner."  Over the years I used the term myself, thinking the saying was quite quaint.

My paternal grandfather, Clyde Bosworth Sr. happened to have a dairy farm next door to "Grampa" Baker's new home leaving one to wonder if perhaps in the early mornings he would hear the melodious tinkle as cows moved slowly from one grazing spot to another.  Or maybe around sundown, when the herd was being brought home for milking.

Farmers of the world have been belling their cows for thousands of years. In America, except for a few remote spots, the old and time-honored tinkle of the cowbell is now mute and almost obscure.  Today's cows are mechanized and data-processed and the modern dairyman knows where every cow is at all times.

The traditionally prudent New England dairy farmer sometimes fashioned, with his frugal fingers, bells out of scraps of metal, which he then shaped with a hammer.  History records the first commercial manufacturer of cowbells as being the Barton Bell Company, founded in 1793 in East Hampton, Connecticut.

Fading Memories: A Tribute to the 70th Anniversary of the End of the Second World War

Victor Jorgensen's photo from Time Square, public domain.

The pivotal moment of the Twentieth Century, The Second World War came to it's end seventy years ago this month.
Politically, scientifically and even culturally, it marked a transitional phase in our nation. Many of us grew up hearing of the saga from those who participated in the events. For others, it is a journey through tomes and photographs, capturing not only the technical aspects of the conflict but also the emotions, fears and hopes of those who lived and died through it. Countless films of various quality have been made.
What is important about this anniversary of the end of the War is how close we are to losing all living memories of those years. Surviving veterans are now well into their late eighties and nineties. Even the children who participated in scrap metal drives are now senior citizens.

Let us ponder all that happened in those years, and think about those who sacrificed their tomorrows so we could have our today.
