Fading Memories: A Tribute to the 70th Anniversary

of the End of the Second World War

Victor Jorgensen's photo from Times Square, public domain.
The pivotal moment of the Twentieth Century, The Second World War came to it's end seventy years ago this month.
Politically, scientifically and even culturally, it marked a transitional phase in our nation.
Many of us grew up hearing of the saga from those who participated in the events. For others, it is a journey through tomes and photographs, capturing not only the technical aspects of the conflict but also the emotions, fears and hopes of those who lived and died through it.
Countless films of various quality have been made.

What is important about this anniversary of the end of the War is how close we are to losing all living memories of those years. Surviving veterans are now well into their late eighties and nineties. Even the children who participated in scrap metal drives are now senior citizens.
Let us ponder all that happened in those years, and think about those who sacrificed their tomorrows so we could have our today.

Historical Tidbit:  Law enforcement in early Bridgewater

In these days of police/community relations, one can't help but wonder how it all began.
Dr. Ben Spence has researched this subject and come up with some interesting information.
In the beginning, the church was the ruler.  Church elders or deacons handled those that broke the laws of the colonies, little more than the Ten Commandments.
As time went on and the population spread out, there was a need to handle law enforcement on a local level far removed from the first church. Early church records talk of parishioners being brought before the church by the deacons to confess their crimes and face the punishment.
The punishment often involved lashes or a fine and sometimes a commitment to attend services with reform in mind.  Capitol crimes were still sent to the county court in Plymouth.
It was not until the American Constitution called for the separation of church and state that the state, county or community government slowly took over the responsibility of laws to control offenders.
In Bridgewater, the turning point was finally the creation of the four separate towns and the end of churches being used as the seat of town government.
Each town appointed constables, and it was not until about 1900 that  we hear about formal police officers.
What were the offenses back then, are much the same as what we read about today.  Church records speak of folks being brought before the church for robbery, home invasion, intoxication, rape, infidelity, a
ssault and battery,  and murder.  There was even an offense of cross dressing and attending church. So,
today news is nothing new, people will be people.

The Bridgewater Community Dance Series
will be starting its fifth year this coming September, featuring a mix of international folk dance and New England squares and contras.
We have a steady group of 20-30 dancers, who not only enjoy the dancing (it's great exercise!), but also enjoy the opportunity for joyful interaction with others.  For 2015/2016, dancers may sign up for an eight session fall series, a twelve session winter/spring series, all 20 sessions, OR may attend any dance without committing to the series.  No prior experience is required, all dances are taught, and first time attendees get a free night! Dances are held on alternating Fridays-with some exceptions-from 7:30-9:15 p.m., at the Bridgewater Senior Center.

Dates for the fall are September 4 and 18, October 2, 16, and 30, November 13 and 20, and December 11.  Dates for the winter/spring series are: January 15 and 29, February 5 and 19, March 4 and 18, April 1, 15, and 29, and May 6 and 20, and June 3.  Session fees, per person, are $48 for the fall, $72 for the winter/spring, or $105 ($15 savings) to sign up for both.  Single night attendees will be charged $8 per dance.  Dance leader, Sam Baumgarten, professor emeritus at Bridgewater State University, has over 40 years of teaching experience and continues to teach classes at BSU in folk, square, and contra dance.  To obtain a registration form or for more information, contact Sam at 508-697-6848, or 774-208-2933, or sbaumgarten@verizon.net.  Don't be afraid to try it out, maybe get out of your comfort zone.  You won't be disappointed!
