Fading Memories: A Tribute to the 70th Anniversary

of the End of the Second World War

Victor Jorgensen's photo from Times Square, public domain
The pivotal moment of the Twentieth Century, The Second World War came to it's end seventy years ago this month.  Politically, scientifically and even culturally, it marked a transitional phase in our nation.
Many of us grew up hearing of the saga from those who participated in the events. For others, it is a journey through tomes and photographs, capturing not only the technical aspects of the conflict but also the emotions, fears and hopes of those
who lived and died through it.
Countless films of various quality have been made. What is important about this anniversary of the end of the War is how close we are to losing all living memories
of those years. Surviving veterans are now well into their late eighties and nineties. Even the children who participated in scrap metal drives are now senior citizens.
Let us ponder all that happened in those years, and think about those who sacrificed their tomorrows so we could have our todays.

Historical Tidbit:
East Bridgewater Unites To Fight The Civil War

President Lincoln had issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteers to fight for the Union.   April 16, 1861, "a troop train carrying the Fourth Massachusetts Regiment went through East Bridgewater enroute to Fort Monroe, Virginia.  Two East Bridgewater men, George Edson and Bradford Hathaway, were part of that regiment.
No longer was the town divided on the issue of slavery; the people of East Bridgewater united with a surge of intense patriotism, which was heightened even further on the 19th, when word reached the town that the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment, on its way south, had been attacked by a mob of pro-secessionists in Baltimore, and had suffered several casualties.
After the news, East Bridgewater held a town meeting to raise money for uniforms, weapons, and training for the troops in the war.  The meeting had almost 100% attendance and raised $4,000 for the volunteer soldiers."
