Fading Memories: A Tribute to the 70th Anniversary of the End of the Second World War

Victor Jorgensen's photo from Time Square, public domain.

The pivotal moment of the Twentieth Century, The Second World War came to it's end seventy years ago this month.
Politically, scientifically and even culturally, it marked a transitional phase in our nation. Many of us grew up hearing of the saga from those who participated in the events. For others, it is a journey through tomes and photographs, capturing not only the technical aspects of the conflict but also the emotions, fears and hopes of those who lived and died through it. Countless films of various quality have been made.
What is important about this anniversary of the end of the War is how close we are to losing all living memories of those years. Surviving veterans are now well into their late eighties and nineties. Even the children who participated in scrap metal drives are now senior citizens.

Let us ponder all that happened in those years, and think about those who sacrificed their tomorrows so we could have our today.

Respectfully Submitted, M. Hardy

Historical Tidbit:  First Church

In the late 1800's, the First Church was the center of most town action in West Bridgewater.
It was quite tall by existing standards, with 2 rows of ten foot tall windows leading up to a bell tower and steeple.
The shell of the current church is the same, although it has undergone some modifications and additions.
It had a simple exterior and the traditional three doors across the front.
Local folklore suggests these three doors were so the land owners and gentry who paid for their pews would enter through the center. The side doors were access to the balconies for the slaves and non-land owners to use.

Other historians suggest the three doors are common on New England churches so the men and women enter separately and the minister & honored guests enter through the center door.
