Fading Memories: A Tribute to the 70th Anniversary of the End of the Second World War

Victor Jorgensen's Times Square photo, public domain.

The pivotal moment of the Twentieth Century, The Second World War came to it's end seventy years ago this month.
Politically, scientifically and even culturally, it marked a transitional phase in our nation.
Many of us grew up hearing of the saga from those who participated in the events. For others, it is a journey through tomes and photographs, capturing not only the technical aspects of the conflict but also the emotions, fears and hopes of those who lived and died through it. Countless films of various quality have been made.

What is important about this anniversary of the end of the War is how close we are to losing all living memories of those years. Surviving veterans are now well into their late eighties and nineties. Even the children who participated in scrap metal drives are now senior citizens. Let us ponder all that happened in those years, and think about those who sacrificed their tomorrows so we could have our todays.

Historical Tidbit:
THE DARK DAY

"May 19, 1780 was a remarkable dark day, which extended over the eastern states.
It commenced in Halifax early in the morning and continued till the morning of the 20th.
The atmosphere here appeared to be filled with a dense smoke but there was no known cause which could produce such an effect.
The grass and leaves appeared to be drenched in a gloomy green.
The darkest time of the day was between eleven and two o'clock.  Many families found it necessary to light a candle when they ate their dinner. (Noon time meal)
In the night, it is said 'there was not a ray of light even of the feeblest class to distinguish an object though ever so near.'
The real cause of this darkness has nestled in conjecture to
the present day."

Back in 1780, there was no way to find an explanation as to what was happening because there were no meteorologists.  Today  scientists and researchers believe that distant wildfires caused the darkness due to high amounts of ash particles in the atmosphere.

Respectfully submitted,
Sue Basile

Interested Serving on the Halifax Cultural Council?

The Halifax Board of Selectmen is seeking residents interested in
serving on the Halifax Cultural Council. The Council provides grant funding for a wide-range of cultural programs and activities. However, in order to distribute this grant funding, the Council needs a minimum of five members. The Council usually meets twice a year: once in the late summer to review the grant procedures and once in the late fall to make grant decisions. Any resident interested in serving on the Council should contact the Halifax Board of Selectmen's Office at 781-294-1316.
