EARLY FENCES

The first settlers were interested primarily in acquiring land. Thus land became the basis of a man's wealth. There was little ready money and the

expression "land poor" was often literally true. Most of the proprietors and many of the first settlers of a town would be called land speculators today.  As one looks through town records, it is amazing to see the constant buying and selling of land.

With the emphasis on land, it was necessary to have accurate boundaries and fences.  Robert Frost understood this when he wrote "good fences make good neighbors."

The first fences were probably made of pine stumps as this region was covered with huge pine trees. If the land was level and relatively free of large stones,  it would have been easy to plow.

Our early farmers could have burned the huge stumps as they cleared the fields, but this was a long, slow process. The settlers needed cleared field immed

iately for the planting of grain to feed their families and livestock.  These sensible, hard-working farmers had a new idea.  The stumps could be pulled and hauled to the edges of their fields to serve as fences. This fence was not only cheap, but long-lasting and needing no repairs.

The more rockier areas  built stone walls with the large stones found in their fields.

The Bridgewater Community Dance Series
will be starting its fifth year this coming September, featuring a mix of international folk dance and New England squares and contras.
We have a steady group of 20-30 dancers, who not only enjoy the dancing (it's great exercise!), but also enjoy the opportunity for joyful interaction with others.  For 2015/2016, dancers may sign up for an eight session fall series, a twelve session winter/spring series, all 20 sessions, OR may attend any dance without committing to the series.  No prior experience is required, all dances are taught, and first time attendees get a free night! Dances are held on alternating Fridays-with some exceptions-from 7:30-9:15 p.m., at the Bridgewater Senior Center.

Dates for the fall are September 4 and 18, October 2, 16, and 30, November 13 and 20, and December 11.  Dates for the winter/spring series are: January 15 and 29, February 5 and 19, March 4 and 18, April 1, 15, and 29, and May 6 and 20, and June 3.  Session fees, per person, are $48 for the fall, $72 for the winter/spring, or $105 ($15 savings) to sign up for both.  Single night attendees will be charged $8 per dance.  Dance leader, Sam Baumgarten, professor emeritus at Bridgewater State University, has over 40 years of teaching experience and continues to teach classes at BSU in folk, square, and contra dance.  To obtain a registration form or for more information, contact Sam at 508-697-6848, or 774-208-2933, or sbaumgarten@verizon.net.  Don't be afraid to try it out, maybe get out of your comfort zone.  You won't be disappointed!

Bridgewater's CAPRIOL CONSORT  Recorder Musical Group

Capriol Consort Recorders Concert
Capriol Consort Recorders Concert

The recent performance of the Bridgewater based Capriol Consort performance as part of the Massachusetts Walking Tour delighted the audience at nearby WB Public Library.

Performers in the current concert are Marcia Anderson, Judy Cicierega, Deb Giokas, Cindy Lincoln, Charlene Setzer, and Patty Simon.

The Capriol Consort, named for a character in a 16th century dance manual, has been in existence since the early 90's, meeting weekly to explore music from the 12th century to the present. Their instruments are recorders-all sizes. The recorder is wonderfully suited to a variety of musical styles. In this program, you will hear choices from a range of ancient Sephardic song to a 17th century English Country Dance tune to a sea chantey, a spiritual, a Mexican lament upon eviction from the homeland, and an old American favorite. The recorders will be joined by viola da gamba, percussion, and a family of crumhorns--you'll find out!

Under the direction of Marcia Anderson, retired from the English Department at Bridgewater State University, the group has played at schools, churches, libraries, and private parties. In an earlier configuration, they performed at King Richard's Faire, the North Easton Arts Festival, and Plimoth Plantation, and were featured on radio (New Bedford's WBSM) and television (Massasoit's "Routes of Music"). The musicians come from West Bridgewater, Bridgewater, Middleboro, and the regional area.

If you've ever had the experience of playing recorder in elementary school, you probably remember an inexpensive, squeaky instrument that you never took very seriously. The Capriol Consort takes recorders very seriously and uses not only soprano recorders but also alto, tenor and bass. They even occasionally use a sopranino (higher than soprano) and a C bass (lower than a bass!) The fingerings are different on the different sizes and they read in both treble and bass clef; the musicians like to joke that it prevents Alzheimer's!

Respectfully Submitted, Beth Roll- Smith

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever c
ome back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. " ~
