Historical Tidbit:

EARLY FENCES

The first settlers were interested primarily in acquiring land. Thus land became the basis of a man's wealth. There was little ready money and the

expression "land poor" was often literally true. Most of the proprietors and many of the first settlers of a town would be called land speculators today.  As one looks through town records, it is amazing to see the constant buying and selling of land.

With the emphasis on land, it was necessary to have accurate boundaries and fences.  Robert Frost understood this when he wrote "good fences make good neighbors."

The first fences were probably made of pine stumps as this region was covered with huge pine trees. If the land was level and relatively free of large stones,  it would have been easy to plow.

Our early farmers could have burned the huge stumps as they cleared the fields, but this was a long, slow process. The settlers needed cleared field immed

iately for the planting of grain to feed their families and livestock.  These sensible, hard-working farmers had a new idea.  The stumps could be pulled and hauled to the edges of their fields to serve as fences. This fence was not only cheap, but long-lasting and needing no repairs.

The more rockier areas  built stone walls with the large stones found in their fields.

Our early ingenious farmers had a use for everything! sue and her plant

Jessica C. Thurston Memorial Fund Road Race

2nd Annual. Sept 5th, come run with us!

Jessica C. Thurston was a native of East Bridgewater who sadly passed

away from breast cancer at the age of twenty-nine in 2013. A graduate of East Bridgewater High School graduating with a psychology degree from Bridgewater State College, Jessica had a passion for running, finishing a half marathon shortly before her diagnoses.

In honor of her resiliency and in an effort to raise funds for further research into breast cancer treatment, the Second Annual Run for Jess road race will be held on September 5th at the East Bridgewater Commercial Club.

Art + Botany = Fun!!!

On July 14 and 18, Florals from the Heart  & the EBBA gave an opportunity for budding artists to illustrate some of the botanical wonders at their shop.

Refreshments were provided. Artists of all ages were in attendance as Heather Yurewicz-Ciccio of Boston Fun Works helped attendees make their works.
There are no mistakes in art! One never knows who may become a classic painter along the lines of a Salvador Dali or a Pablo Picasso.

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever c
ome back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. " ~
