Historical Tidbit:

EARLY FENCES

The first settlers were interested primarily in acquiring land. Thus land became the basis of a man's wealth. There was little ready money and the

expression "land poor" was often literally true. Most of the proprietors and many of the first settlers of a town would be called land speculators today.  As one looks through town records, it is amazing to see the constant buying and selling of land.

With the emphasis on land, it was necessary to have accurate boundaries and fences.  Robert Frost understood this when he wrote "good fences make good neighbors."

The first fences were probably made of pine stumps as this region was covered with huge pine trees. If the land was level and relatively free of large stones,  it would have been easy to plow.

Our early farmers could have burned the huge stumps as they cleared the fields, but this was a long, slow process. The settlers needed cleared field immed

iately for the planting of grain to feed their families and livestock.  These sensible, hard-working farmers had a new idea.  The stumps could be pulled and hauled to the edges of their fields to serve as fences. This fence was not only cheap, but long-lasting and needing no repairs.

sue and her plant

The more rockier areas  built stone walls with the large stones found in their fields. Our early ingenious farmers had a use for everything!

Respectfully Submitted.

Those interested in Pleasant Hill Cemetery Inc. of West Bridgewater (the 3 acre historic non-profit cemetery off the end of Old West Center Street beyond the Park & Ride) are invited to 'LIKE' their recently established Facebook page called

The Cemetery is staffed 100% by volunteers, and contains the graves of many town fathers, family plots, veterans from Spanish-American, Civil, and World Wars, POWs, and even an underground railroad child.
In addition to updates on the cemetery, lovers of genealogy and history will enjoy reading the "lot by lot" summaries being posted of those buried within the grounds along with headstone photos.  Although there is extensive historical significance, Pleasant Hill is still an operating cemetery,
and lots & graves remain available to purchase.

In addition to the Facebook page, a fundraiser has been established at:  www.gofundme/PleasantHillCem to raise money to repair the disturbing vandalism damaged suffered between 2012-2015, as well as clean illegible old stones, repair/reset fallen ones due to age/deterioration, and do other necessary improvements and future maintenance to protect the cemetery and ensure the preservation of its history.

New Beginnings Take Form

View of the Cafeteria From Above
Mark Bodwell, Principal & Dr. Patricia Oakley, Superintendent of Schools offer a sneak peek.

The construction enters its final stage for the new West Bridgewater Middle-Senior High School as the lettering is put up on the facility, allowing the next generation of students to appreciate the modernity provided.

It has been a long road. While our eye is on the future and wishing the best for our students, one must not forget the past and the memories formed over the decades.

At one time the previous building was considered state of the art.  Generations learned there.  With a nod to the past, we embrace the future, and celebrate moments past and yet to be made.

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever c
ome back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. " ~
