Historical Tidbit:

EARLY FENCES

The first settlers were interested primarily in acquiring land. Thus land became the basis of a man's wealth. There was little ready money and the

expression "land poor" was often literally true. Most of the proprietors and many of the first settlers of a town would be called land speculators today.  As one looks through town records, it is amazing to see the constant buying and selling of land.

With the emphasis on land, it was necessary to have accurate boundaries and fences.  Robert Frost understood this when he wrote "good fences make good neighbors."

The first fences were probably made of pine stumps as this region was covered with huge pine trees. If the land was level and relatively free of large stones,  it would have been easy to plow.

Our early farmers could have burned the huge stumps as they cleared the fields, but this was a long, slow process. The settlers needed cleared field immed

iately for the planting of grain to feed their families and livestock.  These sensible, hard-working farmers had a new idea.  The stumps could be pulled and hauled to the edges of their fields to serve as fences. This fence was not only cheap, but long-lasting and needing no repairs.

The more rockier areas  built stone walls with the large stones found in their fields.

Cool Fun at the Holmes Library!

During the heat wave last week, Summer Reading groups at the Holmes Public Library celebrated Water Week with Marie Coady and her teen volunteers.

Kids made water balloon yo-yos, played games (including a variation on Duck, Duck, Goose called Drip, Drip, Splash) and got really wet!

Upcoming events to close out another year of Summer Reading fun:
Transportation Night, Wed., Aug. 12, at 6:00 p. Rain date, Aug. 19.
Music Fun with the Girl Scouts, Thurs., Aug. 20, 11 am. Best
Photos respectfully submitted by Holmes Library
for grades K-4, but all ages welcome.

Crafts at the Holmes Public Library

The Toddler Storytime group made personalized tool belts in their favorite colors during the craft portion of one of the many "Every Hero Has a Story" programs presented by Marie Coady ("Miss Marie") at the Holmes Public Library last week.

Interested Serving on the Halifax Cultural Council?

The Halifax Board of Selectmen is seeking residents interested in
serving on the Halifax Cultural Council. The Council provides grant funding for a wide-range of cultural programs and activities. However, in order to distribute this grant funding, the Council needs a minimum of five members. The Council usually meets twice a year: once in the late summer to review the grant procedures and once in the late fall to make grant decisions. Any resident interested in serving on the Council should contact the Halifax Board of Selectmen's Office at 781-294-1316.

The Monponsett Trading Post

This time of year, many of us enjoy the great outdoors, and in Halifax the Monponsett Pond is simply too large to ignore.

Right along its shores, on 590 Monponsett Street, is the Monponsett Trading Post; ideal for those who would enjoy catching those fish so close by.

A family operated business, it sells handcrafted lures and fishing rods.

For those with a sweeter tooth, they also sell local honey!  Local arts and crafts are for sale, many with the theme of Halifax and other local towns abundant. Feel free to check it out and perhaps make that special catch on the pond afterwards.

Glass etching, rod and lure customized painting & unique fishing supplies.
A reel catch for everyone!

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever c
ome back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. " ~
