HOME DELIVERIES

Back in the early 1900's, going to the store was not a very common practice.  Twice a week the grocery man would

travel around town in the morning with his horse and wagon, visiting every home, and take orders for dry goods that were needed.  It would have been an item that the homeowner could not grow or raise themselves such as flour, coffee, tea, etc.  That afternoon he would return to each home with their delivery.

There was also a gentleman from Middleboro who would

come around with his wagon selling meat.  He was a

butcher and usually came once a week.  He would

have a large drawer on the back of the wagon where the meat was kept and would cut what you wanted from the meat he carried that day.  He would also take an order if he didn't

have what you wanted.

Once in a Blue Moon

When one hears the phrase 'once in a blue moon,' it generally implies something that happens only once in a great while.

However, there is an astronomical truth to the saying.

A Blue Moon represents a full moon that appears in a month that has already had a full moon previously in it. July 2 and July 31, 2015, happen to have such a celestial showing. This usually happens every two or three years, with the next Blue Moon not occurring until January 2 and January 31, 2018. The etymology of the term 'Blue Moon' can be traced to the old term 'belewe', to betray, or perhaps from the old folklore that gave every month's moon a particular name with the term 'Blue' coined as to not displace the titles of the other showings. Those who find this fascinating can link into infoplease.com/spot/bluemoon for more data.

Bridgewater's CAPRIOL CONSORT  Recorder Musical Group

Capriol Consort Recorders Concert
Capriol Consort Recorders Concert

The recent performance of the Bridgewater based Capriol Consort performance as part of the Massachusetts Walking Tour delighted the audience at nearby WB Public Library.

Performers in the current concert are Marcia Anderson, Judy Cicierega, Deb Giokas, Cindy Lincoln, Charlene Setzer, and Patty Simon.

The Capriol Consort, named for a character in a 16th century dance manual, has been in existence since the early 90's, meeting weekly to explore music from the 12th century to the present. Their instruments are recorders-all sizes. The recorder is wonderfully suited to a variety of musical styles. In this program, you will hear choices from a range of ancient Sephardic song to a 17th century English Country Dance tune to a sea chantey, a spiritual, a Mexican lament upon eviction from the homeland, and an old American favorite. The recorders will be joined by viola da gamba, percussion, and a family of crumhorns--you'll find out!

Under the direction of Marcia Anderson, retired from the English Department at Bridgewater State University, the group has played at schools, churches, libraries, and private parties. In an earlier configuration, they performed at King Richard's Faire, the North Easton Arts Festival, and Plimoth Plantation, and were featured on radio (New Bedford's WBSM) and television (Massasoit's "Routes of Music"). The musicians come from West Bridgewater, Bridgewater, Middleboro, and the regional area.

If you've ever had the experience of playing recorder in elementary school, you probably remember an inexpensive, squeaky instrument that you never took very seriously. The Capriol Consort takes recorders very seriously and uses not only soprano recorders but also alto, tenor and bass. They even occasionally use a sopranino (higher than soprano) and a C bass (lower than a bass!) The fingerings are different on the different sizes and they read in both treble and bass clef; the musicians like to joke that it prevents Alzheimer's!

"Hope" Is The Thing With Feathers

"Hope" is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
