Annual Statistics are in for the

Raynham Public Library

Our annual statistics for the fiscal year just ended offer a wealth of information about Raynham library service - from how many items were borrowed, to how many items were loaned to other libraries, from attendance at programs, use of library computers and online services, to how many people walked through our doors.

These statistics show an overall increase in library use; total circulation increased 5% over the previous year to 118,000 items.

Much of the growth came from increased use of library e-content, the downloadable or streaming ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and magazines, that users are finding more and more easier to access and download remotely to their home computers, tablets or smartphones. Children viewed more than 11,000 e-books from our Tumblebook collection, and more than 4,200 items were downloaded from the OverDrive collection.

The Hoopla service of streaming movies registered almost 3,000 views, and the new Zinio service for reading magazines online is proving popular as well.

We love these statistics; because we love knowing that what we do at the library makes a difference in the lives of people we serve. We love to be busy, to answer questions about the collection, to find that special book, CD or DVD, to give assistance with the e-catalog, e-reader, or e-demo station, or to introduce a user to a new service or program. Everyone who comes through the door wants or needs something. We are only too happy to help.

The annual statistics are fascinating, and offer us insight into the community's interests and needs. They tell us as much about our collection as our users. We'll spend a good many hours analyzing, evaluating and comparing these figures, looking for trends to guide our decisions to serve you in the years to come.

HOME DELIVERIES

Back in the early 1900's, going to the store was not a very

common practice.  Twice a week the grocery man would travel around town in the morning with his horse and wagon, visiting every home, and take orders for the dry goods that were needed.  It would have been an item that the homeowner could not grow or raise themselves such as flour, coffee, tea, etc.  That afternoon he would return to each home with their delivery.

There was also a gentleman from Middleboro who would come around with his wagon selling meat.  He was  the butcher and usually came once a week.  He would have a large drawer on the back of the wagon where the meat was kept and would cut what you wanted from the meat he carried that day.

He would also take an order if he didn't have what you wanted.

Once in a Blue Moon

When one hears the phrase 'once in a blue moon,' it generally implies something that happens only once in a great while. However, there is an astronomical truth to the saying.

A Blue Moon represents a full moon that appears in a month that has already had a full moon previously in it. July 2 and July 31, 2015, happen to have such a celestial showing.

This usually happens every two or three years, with the next Blue Moon not occurring until January 2 and January 31, 2018.

The etymology of the term 'Blue Moon' can be traced to the old term 'belewe', to betray, or perhaps from the old folklore that gave every month's moon a particular name with the term 'Blue' coined as to not displace the titles of the other showings. Those who find this fascinating can link into infoplease.com/spot/bluemoon for more data.

Summer Adventure Books at the Library

Take a look at some of these great books our library has available for summer reading!

Lost in Shangri-la: a true story of survival, adventure and the most incredible rescue mission of World War II, by Mitchel Zuckoff, recounts the story of three American survivors of a plane crash in Dutch New Guinea and their encounters with enemy Japanese soldiers and primitive natives, all while trying to stay alive in the mountainous jungle.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place, by Aron Ralston, is one of the most extraordinary survival stories ever. Trapped by rocks for six days in one of the most remote regions of Utah, the author faced certain death until one incredible act of courage set him free.

In The Perfect Storm: a true story of men against the sea, author Sebastian Junger tells the dramatic story of the crew of the Andrea Gail, the fishing boat struck by a rogue wave in the North Atlantic during the Perfect Storm of 1991. This bestseller inspired the movie of the same name.

Into Thin Air: a personal account of the Mount Everest Disaster, by Jon Krakauer, describes the author's survival of a catastrophic storm on the top of Everest that claimed the lives of eight companions. Watch for the movie adaptation to be released this September.

The Lost City of Oz, a tale of deadly obsession in the Amazon, by David Grann, tells the story of the British explorer Percy Fawcett who, in 1925, disappeared with his son in the Amazon while looking for an ancient lost city.

Pirate Hunters: treasure, obsession, and the search for a legendary pirate ship, by Robert Kurson, is a gripping account of the hunt for the Golden Fleece, the shipwreck of the seventeenth century pirate ship captained by legendary swashbuckler Joseph Bannister.

Experience amazing adventures and travel far and wide this summer, all without leaving home. Read!

A Bittersweet Move for Mrs. Letendre

On June 24, the staff and students of the Merrill Elementary School said a sad farewell to Mrs. Letendre, who had dedicated her heart and soul into the lives and loves of the youngsters. She was one of those gems who would listen not only to the problems of the students, but would give a willing ear to their retelling of accomplishments and triumphs. Pam Benoit, Kristen Weaver and Leslie Kola were instrumental in the planning of this farewell event. A 'Merrill Elementary School Family Tree' was created that had the handprints of the students and staff as a warm memento of her service and enduring memories.

Mrs. Letendre is moving on to the Mitchell Elementary School where she is going to bring her beautiful gifts to those students. Thank you Mrs. Letendre!

"Hope" Is The Thing With Feathers

"Hope" is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm
I've heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
