Jessica C. Thurston Memorial Fund Road Race

2nd Annual. Sept 5th, come run with us!

Jessica C. Thurston was a native of East Bridgewater who sadly passed

away from breast cancer at the age of twenty-nine in 2013. A graduate of East Bridgewater High School graduating with a psychology degree from Bridgewater State College, Jessica had a passion for running, finishing a half marathon shortly before her diagnoses.

In honor of her resiliency and in an effort to raise funds for further research into breast cancer treatment, the Second Annual Run for Jess road race will be held on September 5th at the East Bridgewater Commercial Club.

Historical Tidbit: On Samuel Allen

                                              Samuel Allen House

"Picture if you will, Samuel Allen's residence in this community, in 1660.

Everything that went into his humble cabin had to be hewn from the forest by hand. Everything he ate had to be grown or be killed in the forests.  Everything he wore had to be spun from thread and his clothes were sparse and to say the least, itchy.

His cabin probably had a dirt floor, there were no lights. His knowledge of what went on in  world affairs was limited to say the least.  The dangers of the forest were very great, for they were the unknown.  The winters were bitter, cold and terrible, the summers hot and humid, and loneliness was an overriding fact of life.

"Samuel Allen was by any standard a rugged pioneer and adventurer, whose hands were calloused from dawn to dusk struggle just to survive.  Samuel Allen was a strong man and this strength carried him through to the eventual office as the Town Clerk of Bridgewater and the deacon of his church, but he was the first settler and tribute must be paid to him today.
For without the Sam Allens of the world, nothing would have ever been settled."

Dream Tale Puppets Presents Rumpelstiltskin

Monday, August 3 at 4pm

EB Public Library

Rumpelstilskin follows the well known fairy tale about a girl whose father, the Miller, loved her so much that he made up stories about her unusual talents. Truthfulness wasn't something the Miller cared much about, but after he bragged to the king whose treasury coffers where empty, he put his only child into big trouble. His daughter Kathleen had to spin straw into gold or lose her life! Fortunately, an odd looking stranger jumped straight into the story and offered the help. Accepting help from strangers is always risky business, and that is how it was this time. After the king married Kathleen and made her into the queen, she gave her royal husband a child -- but she was faced with losing it all if she could not pass one more test: finding well hidden word - the name of mysterious stranger.
This 40- 45 minutes long show features five beautifully crafted table-top puppets brought to life by two masterful puppeteers: Jacek Zuzanski and Norina Reif or Margaret Moody. Suggested audience ages 3 and up.

Puppeteers will stay for questions & allow children to meet the puppets after the performance.

We All Love Pizza!!!

Respectfully Submitted by M. Hardy

Well, perhaps not all of us, but the vast majority of Americans love those cheesy pies!  True, it is believed that pizza originated in the Naples region of Italy, but immigrants brought the recipe with them and it has become as diverse as this nation itself.

Indeed, pizza has been exported all over the world, and has culinary followings in places as far away as Chile and Australia. While the nutritional merits of the pies may be dubious, you do get antioxidants in the tomato sauce and, depending on the toppings, a fair amount of vitamins, protein or fiber.

The food is fun, like summer!

In the East Bridgewater setting, we have quite a few great places to choose from, including: Amante Italien Pizzeria, Athens Pizza and Subs, Baldies Pizza, Domino's, Old Country Pizzeria, Papa Stelio's Pizza House, Pizza Tyme, Satucket Pizzeria, Tri-Town Pizza and Subs and Viking Pizza. Some of us are courageous enough to make our own homemade varieties. Whatever the choice, pizza has become such a staple of our diet that it is impossible to ignore. Why is this writer making this post? Perhaps he has a craving for the pies as he writes!
