A Bittersweet Move for Mrs. Letendre

On June 24, the staff and students of the Merrill Elementary School said a sad farewell to Mrs. Letendre, who had dedicated her heart and soul into the lives and loves of the youngsters. She was one of those gems who would listen not only to the problems of the students, but would give a willing ear to their retelling of accomplishments and triumphs. Pam Benoit, Kristen Weaver and Leslie Kola were instrumental in the planning of this farewell event. A 'Merrill Elementary School Family Tree' was created that had the handprints of the students and staff as a warm memento of her service and enduring memories.

Mrs. Letendre is moving on to the Mitchell Elementary School where she is going to bring her beautiful gifts to those students. Thank you Mrs. Letendre!

Historical Tidbit: Talking Turkey

At the time of colonial settlement, the wild turkey was widespread in Massachusetts.
As settlement progressed, hardwood forests were cut and the range of the turkey began to shrink.
The last known native bird was killed in 1851.
After the Civil War, land use patterns began to change.  Farms were abandoned and the forests regenerated.

Mass Wildlife managers learned that trapping and relocating wild birds was a successful restoration strategy.  Biologists captured 37 birds in New York and released them in southern Berkshire County between 1972 and 1973.  The new flock grew, and by the fall of 1978 the estimated population was 1,000 birds.  Turkeys soon ranged throughout most parts of Massachusetts west of the Connecticut River.  In-state transplants of the birds, conducted until 1996, expanded the range of the bird into the central, northeastern and southeastern parts of the state.  Now, the estimated state population is over 18,000 birds!

In the 1990's, the wild turkey was named the state's official game bird.  Under careful management, the future looks bright for turkeys; sportsmen, naturalists and other wildlife enthusiasts welcome their return.

Turkeys are black to blackish-bronze with white wing bars, blackish-brown tail feathers and a bluish-gray to red head. Male wild turkeys ("toms") weigh 16 to 24 pounds.  They sport a hair-like "beard" which protrudes from the breastbone.  When a tom is strutting, its head turns a bright red.  Females, called hens, are smaller - about 9 to 12 pounds.

Summer Adventure Books at the Library

Take a look at some of these great books our library has available for summer reading!

Lost in Shangri-la: a true story of survival, adventure and the most incredible rescue mission of World War II, by Mitchel Zuckoff, recounts the story of three American survivors of a plane crash in Dutch New Guinea and their encounters with enemy Japanese soldiers and primitive natives, all while trying to stay alive in the mountainous jungle.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place, by Aron Ralston, is one of the most extraordinary survival stories ever. Trapped by rocks for six days in one of the most remote regions of Utah, the author faced certain death until one incredible act of courage set him free.

In The Perfect Storm: a true story of men against the sea, author Sebastian Junger tells the dramatic story of the crew of the Andrea Gail, the fishing boat struck by a rogue wave in the North Atlantic during the Perfect Storm of 1991. This bestseller inspired the movie of the same name.

Into Thin Air: a personal account of the Mount Everest Disaster, by Jon Krakauer, describes the author's survival of a catastrophic storm on the top of Everest that claimed the lives of eight companions. Watch for the movie adaptation to be released this September.

The Lost City of Oz, a tale of deadly obsession in the Amazon, by David Grann, tells the story of the British explorer Percy Fawcett who, in 1925, disappeared with his son in the Amazon while looking for an ancient lost city.

Pirate Hunters: treasure, obsession, and the search for a legendary pirate ship, by Robert Kurson, is a gripping account of the hunt for the Golden Fleece, the shipwreck of the seventeenth century pirate ship captained by legendary swashbuckler Joseph Bannister.

Experience amazing adventures and travel far and wide this summer, all without leaving home. Read!

We All Love Pizza!!!

Respectfully Submitted by M. Hardy

Well, perhaps not all of us, but the vast majority of Americans love those cheesy pies!  True, it is believed that pizza originated in the Naples region of Italy, but immigrants brought the recipe with them and it has become as diverse as this nation itself.

Indeed, pizza has been exported all over the world, and has culinary followings in places as far away as Chile and Australia. While the nutritional merits of the pies may be dubious, you do get antioxidants in the tomato sauce and, depending on the toppings, a fair amount of protein or fiber.

But the food is fun, like summer!

In the Raynham setting, we have several options, including Brother's Pizza, Cape Cod Cafe Pizza, Great American Pub,  Godfather's Pizza, Little Caesar's, two Papa Gino's, Pepperoni's, Raynham House of Pizza, Royal Pizza, Royal House of Pizza and Super Pizza to choose from. Some of us are courageous enough to make our own homemade varieties. Whatever the choice, pizza has become such a staple of our diet that it is impossible to ignore. Why is this writer making this post? Perhaps he has a craving for the pies as he writes!
