Independence Day
 John Adams Picture Courtesy Wikipedia

The Declaration of Independence has five parts. They are: the Preamble, the Statement of Human Rights, Charges Against Human Rights, Charges Against the King and Parliament, and the Statement of Separation and Signatures.

56 people signed the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson wrote the majority of it. The writing committee was: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston and Thomas Jefferson.  Both Thomas Jefferson  and John Adams (pictured) died on July 4, 1826.

July Fourth is the "biggest hot dog holiday of the year," according to TIME magazine, with Americans reportedly consuming about 155 million of them on Independence Day alone.

"According to legend, on July 4, 1776, John Adams...and his wife, Abigail, sat down for a celebratory meal of turtle soup, New England poached salmon with egg sauce, green peas and boiled new potatoes in jackets. They followed the meal with Indian pudding or Apple Pandowdy," wrote Justine Sterling for Delish.com in 2011.

BRIDGEWATER RECREATION COMMISSION ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS

 FOR FALL CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING

The Bridgewater Recreation Commission is accepting registrations for the fall, 2015 cross country running program.  The cross country running program, entering its eleventh season, is set to begin on Saturday, September 5.  The program, which is open to Bridgewater youngsters entering grades 5-8 in the fall, will take place every Saturday morning, from 9:00-10:00, continuing through October 31.  Runners will meet and warm-up at Bridgewater State University's Tinsley Center (behind Swenson Field) and then run on the trails on Great Hill.  The program will be directed by Sam Baumgarten, Kim Larcom, and Joe Gillis.  Sign up forms are being distributed through the schools and will also be posted on the Town website (www.bridgewaterma.org).   For additional information, contact the Recreation office at 508-697-8020, call Sam at 508-697-6848, or e-mail Sam at sbaumgarten@verizon.net

For the second year in a row, youngsters may opt for a competitive opportunity by joining the Bridgewater Blazers Cross Country Team.  Joining the team will require an extra mid-week workout on Wednesdays, from 5:00-6:00 p.m., a commitment to attend selected cross country meets, and some additional costs for entry fees to meets, separate shirts and/or sweat suits to represent the team, and travel to meets.

Also, looking ahead, the Commission will be sponsoring the 36th annual Bridgewater Kids Road Race, tentatively set for Sunday, October 4, at 2:00 p.m.  The one mile race is open to Bridgewater children in grades K-8.  Sign up forms for the road race will be available in the schools in early September and will also be posted on the websites.
