Retirement Appreciation for Captain Gerald Elliot

On June 9, Captain Gerald Elliott received a certificate of appreciation for nearly twenty years of service as fire fighter, training officer and Captain for the Halifax Fire Department while family, friends and elected officials looked on.

Cake and cold drinks were served as Selectwoman Kim Roy presented the certificate and Chief Jason Viveiros, surprising Mr. Elliott, gave him the #56 from the helmet he had worn the last twenty years, as it had been decided to retire the number.

Good luck in your retirement!

Historical Tidbit:

DESCRIPTION OF STANDISH MANOR

Standish Manor or  "The Meadows," consisted of a modernized farmhouse, with about 700 acres of land.  On this land were three farmhouses with outbuildings for the farmers.  The main structure was a square old-fashioned mansion. Considerable extensions had been added making an attractive home with twenty-five rooms, five tiled bathrooms, one servant's bathroom and two toilet rooms, with all the conveniences of a modern house.  The house was attractively papered and was well furnished.  The play room, with mission furniture, and its great fireplace was often used for home dances; and an old barn, transformed in to a simple studio, was not without its charm.

The home stood on a moderate prominent piece of ground that sloped gradually on three sides for over a quarter of a mile in each direction.  The grounds consisted of fine grassland of about 60 acres, fringed with beautiful pine woods extending in a semicircle.

The property included about 10,000 feet of lake front, controlling and protecting the entire residential part.  Included in this frontage was an island of 12 acres in the center of the lake (White's Island), connected with the mainland by a narrow road, all elevated ground, and commanding a beautiful view of East and West Monponsett.

This description was found in a small pamphlet that belongs to a family member. This picturesque story of the Manor allows one to visualize what it truly must have been like so many years ago.

In 1911, the owners sold the property to Miss Myers and Miss Cullingford  for a girl's school.

                                   Local Writers Share!

The Holmes Public Library held its first Local Authors Night Monday night.
Halifax resident Eugene Coghill spoke about writing and publishing his semi-autobiographical novel "Love Is a Fishnet."
Brett Crehan of West Bridgewater, formerly of Brockton, talked about his just-released second novel, Ji Eun's Gift, which is set in southeastern Mass.
Lifelong Quincy resident Rosalind (Roz) Cuschera told the audience how she based her novel, Journey from San Rocco, on her own extended family history starting in post-World War I Italy.
Three writers from the Halifax Writes writers' group that meets monthly at the library shared excerpts from works in progress: Joanne Harris, Marcia Orcutt, and Reference Librarian Susan Scott, the group's facilitator.
The evening ended with book signings and a chance to converse with the authors and writers. For more information about the Halifax Writes Writers Group, please contact the library.

A Message from the Town Administrator

Hi folks,

The Board of Selectmen will host a presentation of the results of the economic development survey (EDSAT, a program run through Northeastern University) on Monday, June 29 at 7:30pm in the Great Hall of the Halifax Town Hall.
The EDSAT helps cities and towns analyze their capacity for economic development. The survey results will include information about Halifax's strengths and weaknesses in connection with economic development along with information about what are the most important factors that owners and developers review when making decisions about starting, re-locating, or expanding a business.
The Town will then be able to use that information to develop a list of possible changes to the Town's procedures and operations, by-laws, and regulations so to improve the climate for economic development in Halifax.
This project is funded through a grant from the Massachusetts District Local Technical Assistance Program and completed with the assistance of the Old Colony Planning Council. All residents, businesses, and local officials are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact the Selectmen's Office at 781-294-1316.

Thanks,

Charlie Seelig

Field Trip Comes to the School!

Due to the wet weather, the 5th graders at the Halifax Elementary School
had an "in door" field trip.  Two historical interpreters were brought into the school. The students leaned about writing with quill pens and how school was in an earlier time.  They heard stories about artifacts and how some of them were
found, along with how old there were.  Space was even set up for games.
All in all, everyone had a great day.
