  Historical Tidbit:
Making the Past Last

Founded in 1791, the Massachusetts Historical Society, an independent research library, is an invaluable resource for American history, life, and culture.  Its extraordinary collections tell the story of America through millions of rare and unique documents, artifacts, and irreplaceable national treasures.

As the nation's first historical society, the MHS strives to enhance the understanding of our nation's past and its connection to the present, demonstrating that history is not just a series of events that happened to individuals long ago, but is integral to the fabric of our daily lives.  Its collections are accessible to anyone with an interest in American history.

Beyond research, the MHS offers many ways for the public to enjoy its collections, including free exhibitions, public lectures, tours, brown-bag lunches, seminars, and teacher workshops.

dove cross Prayer Vigil for the Victims of the A.M.E. shooting in Charlestown, SC
Sunday,  June 21st  7-8 pm,
Central Square Congregational Church,
71 Central Sq., Bridgewater

Congregations and clergy from the Bridgewater area will gather for a prayer vigil to remember all of the victims of this shooting, their friends and relatives, and their congregation.  We mourn their loss, and we gather to express our solidarity with them and with all victims of racism and violence.

This will be a time to grieve the loss of life, to stand against racism, hate, and violence, and to again signal our desire for stricter back ground checks for gun ownership. Bring a candle or sign or flowers if you wish - but most of all bring yourself. It will also be a time to share our feelings and concerns with one another.

All congregations and religious leaders are welcome to join us.

                Massachusetts Walking Tour Concert
June 26th@ 6pm
West Bridgewater Public Library

Sponsored by The Friends of the West Bridgewater Public Library in collaboration with the West Bridgewater Cultural Counci.
Since 2010, co-founders Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards have organized an annual non-profit bipedal concert tour of Massachusetts in support of arts and culture for towns throughout the state. Each free community concert collaborates with local artists, musicians, educational programs, trail managers and land trust groups to highlight both artistic diversity and recreational land use. With each visit, a community has pulled together and taken part in a dialogue which serves to strengthen local investment in the arts.

People still ask "so you actually walk?" YES, with our instruments, and camping gear, to each and every show - and after 8-13 miles of hiking roads and trailways, we perform a concert.

"Well, how does that support the arts?" Each Walking Tour event is a collaboration of cultural movers and shakers such as local artists, art organizations, trail volunteers, cultural council members, and school systems for an evening of shared ideas, stories, and song - thanks to state grants and private trusts, the concerts are always FREE for the communities we visit.

We are looking for local artist, musician, and poets to participate in this free community concert as a sign of support for our local arts.  All interested parties should contact Mark Mandeville @ mark@masswalkingtour.org.  Additional details about the
Massachusetts Walking Tour Concert
and the Nunckatessett Greenway project (Bay Circuit Trail) are provided below.

Mass Walking Tour, June 26th @ 6PM at W.B. Public Library
  • Nunckatessett Greenway Project (part of the Bay Circuit Trail) enhances recreational, environmental, social, and educational opportunities, and also stimulates economic activity in the town of West Bridgewater and Bridgewater. The genesis of the project stems from a grassroots movement of local residents and public officials that wish to see a nature corridor that will elevate people's awareness of the Town River and of historical sites situated along that river, as well as promote outdoor classrooms, economic development and alternative means of travel. www.nunckatessettgreenway.org/resources/videos

We look forward to seeing you at this event and for supporting the local arts.

WB Graduation Full of Community Spirit

West Bridgewater's middle-senior high school graduation was brimming with community pride, teary smiles and gratitude Friday night as students, teachers, parents, friends, and other family gathered at War Memorial
Park for the annual tradition.
41 members of the senior class were praised for their achievement of outstanding MCAS scores, qualifying them for John and Abigail Adams scholarships.  Also praised were members of the National Honor Society, Leo's club, math team, band, chorus, yearbook committee, key club, superintendent's council, heritage committee, athletes of all sports and participants in state championships.
Special thanks was given to Mrs. Dubin and Mrs. Schmeer, two retiring educators who have given so much to the West Bridgewater community.

"The class of 2015 will always hold a special place in West
Bridgewater High School history as the last class to graduate from the
'old' middle senior high school building," said Superintendent Patty Oakley.
There was a tribute to the late Paul Chiulli and a special presentation where each graduate donned a pair of sunglasses, gifted from the Chiulli family.  Paul's parents accepted his diploma posthumously, with the support of all 2015 graduates.

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity" ~ John Muir, Our National Parks

"I walked slowly to enjoy this freedom, and when I came out of the mountains, I saw the sky over the prairie, and I thought that if heaven was real, I hoped it was a place I never had to go, for this earth was greater than any paradise."
Daniel J. Rice
