Have a Wonderful Father's Day!!!

All of us, at one point or another, have looked up to that special man in our life as our mentor, our role model, a guide to what we should best emulate in our lives.

swinging in halifax playground For some of us, it is our biological father, but for some it can be a grandfather, an uncle, or sometimes a man who is not biological family at all, but someone dear to the soul.

Father's Day is a time to celebrate, or in some cases to remember such a special someone in our lives.

If that special someone is still here,  it would be great to honor him in some way, not necessarily with a material gift, but with the gift of your time and attention.

Of course, many 'Dads' out there do enjoy the aspect of a fathers day meal or barbeque, so feed him heartily if you can!
If this someone special is no longer among the living, hold him in your heart.

In any case, let it be a joyful day... or even better, make it last the whole week!

Have a great day, all.

dove cross Prayer Vigil for the Victims of the A.M.E. shooting in Charlestown, SC
Sunday,  June 21st
7-8 pm,
Central Square Congregational Church,
71 Central Sq., Bridgewater

Congregations and clergy from the Bridgewater area will gather for a prayer vigil to remember all of the victims of this shooting, their friends and relatives, and their congregation.  We mourn their loss, and we gather to express our solidarity with them and with all victims of racism and violence.

This will be a time to grieve the loss of life, to stand against racism, hate, and violence, and to again signal our desire for stricter back ground checks for gun ownership. Bring a candle or sign or flowers if you wish - but most of all bring yourself. It will also be a time to share our feelings and concerns with one another.

All congregations and religious leaders are welcome to join us.

  Historical Tidbit:
Making the Past Last

Founded in 1791, the Massachusetts Historical Society, an independent research library, is an invaluable resource for American history, life, and culture.

Its extraordinary collections tell the story of America through millions of rare and unique documents, artifacts, and irreplaceable national treasures.

As the nation's first historical society,

the MHS strives to enhance the understanding of our nation's past and its connection to the present, demonstrating that history is not just a series of events that happened to individuals long ago, but is integral to the fabric of our daily lives. Its collections are accessible to anyone with an interest in American history.

Beyond research, the MHS offers many ways for the public to enjoy its collections, including free exhibitions, public lectures, tours, brown-bag lunches, seminars, and teacher workshops.

United Way Announces Community Impact Grants

The Board of Directors of United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc. (UWGAT) is pleased to announce it will invest $1,720,738 over the next year.  United Way's mission is "to improve lives by uniting the caring power of communities to advance the common good."  UWGAT is committed and focused on investing in programs in the areas of education, income, and health, because these are the building blocks for a good quality of life.

The total investment of $1,720,738 will be allocated to local non-profit organizations administering programs in the priority areas of education, income, and health.  Allocations will be distributed as follows: $481,846 to help enhance education, $427,445 for income stability including the Mass 211 free information and referral system, and $286,300 for healthier communities.  Additionally, $8,927 will be distributed to other United Ways by donor choice and $516,220 to additional designations as requested by donors.

"Every 3 years UWGAT conducts a Community Needs Assessment to remain current and relevant in investing dollars into our local community to best meet the needs of our residents, employees, and guests of our eleven cities and towns," said Jamie E. Crossman, UWGAT President & CEO.  UWGAT serves the cities and towns of: Attleboro, Berkley, Dighton, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norton, Plainville, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk, and Taunton.

UWGAT recruits individuals and organizations from the community who bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done.  UWGAT's volunteers represent all UWGAT donors and they review program funding requests to bring forward investment recommendations to the Board of Directors.

You can be part of the change. You can give, you can advocate, and you can volunteer.  That's what it means to Live United.  For more information, contact United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc. at 508-222-2337, visit www.uwgat.org, or follow UWGAT on Facebook and Twitter.

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity" ~ John Muir, Our National Parks

"I walked slowly to enjoy this freedom, and when I came out of the mountains, I saw the sky over the prairie, and I thought that if heaven was real, I hoped it was a place I never had to go, for this earth was greater than any paradise."
