Remembering the Flag

June 14th is Flag Day in our nation.  It's a Sunday this year, which is somehow fitting, speaking as it does in a veiled way, of reverence, honor, rest and peace.

It was the Second Continental Congress who passed a resolution on June 14th in 1777, that the "flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white" and that "the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation", quotes the History Channel.

Unlike other banners, it is not the flag of a royal family, but (now) of millions of free people from all nations, brought together by a mutual desire for freedom under our Constitution.

United Way Announces Community Impact Grants

The Board of Directors of United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc. (UWGAT) is pleased to announce it will invest $1,720,738 over the next year.  United Way's mission is "to improve lives by uniting the caring power of communities to advance the common good."  UWGAT is committed and focused on investing in programs in the areas of education, income, and health, because these are the building blocks for a good quality of life.

The total investment of $1,720,738 will be allocated to local non-profit organizations administering programs in the priority areas of education, income, and health.  Allocations will be distributed as follows: $481,846 to help enhance education, $427,445 for income stability including the Mass 211 free information and referral system, and $286,300 for healthier communities.  Additionally, $8,927 will be distributed to other United Ways by donor choice and $516,220 to additional designations as requested by donors.

"Every 3 years UWGAT conducts a Community Needs Assessment to remain current and relevant in investing dollars into our local community to best meet the needs of our residents, employees, and guests of our eleven cities and towns," said Jamie E. Crossman, UWGAT President & CEO.  UWGAT serves the cities and towns of: Attleboro, Berkley, Dighton, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norton, Plainville, Raynham, Rehoboth, Seekonk, and Taunton.

UWGAT recruits individuals and organizations from the community who bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done.  UWGAT's volunteers represent all UWGAT donors and they review program funding requests to bring forward investment recommendations to the Board of Directors.

You can be part of the change. You can give, you can advocate, and you can volunteer.  That's what it means to Live United.  For more information, contact United Way of Greater Attleboro/Taunton, Inc. at 508-222-2337, visit www.uwgat.org, or follow UWGAT on Facebook and Twitter.

Notice from the Superintendent

Dear Parents/Guardians,

At the last Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee meeting on May 20, 2015, the School Committee unanimously voted to increase the Middle School Sports fees as of August 1, 2015 as follows:

* A $300.00 per student/per sport fee will be implemented with no student/family cap.

* A minimum of fifteen (15) student participants must be paid in full before each season will commence. If the minimum paid student participation is not met, the sport will be cancelled.

The purpose of the increase is to cover the costs of the self-funded Middle School Sports Program. Although, we can agree that sports are an integral part of a student's "School Life", the expenses incurred by the program are not in keeping with the revenue generated, thereby creating a burden on the District's operational budget. The District cannot run a deficit; therefore, the newly instituted fee structure will be piloted during the 2015-2016 school year.

Further funding via a concerted parent/guardian fundraising effort will be instrumental in the continuance of school-based athletic opportunities at the middle school level. The program will require approximately $2,000.00 in fundraising revenue from both Bridgewater and Raynham to offset program costs.

With the assistance of fundraising efforts and the increase in fees, our plan is that the Middle School Sports programs will once again be self-sustaining and our students will continue to have the opportunity to participate in a school-based athletic program. Thank you for your continued support of the District.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline B. Forbes, Ph.D.

Superintendent of Schools
