"BSU First National Championship in its History"

For the third straight week and fourth time this season, Bridgewater State University senior Chris Perry has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.

On May 23rd, Perry captured the first national championship in the history of the Bridgewater State University varsity athletics program as the BSU senior won the triple jump title this past weekend at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Saint Lawrence University. Perry shattered his own school record in the triple jump as he posted the winning mark of 50 feet, 11 inches (15.52 meters) on his third attempt of the day. Perry nearly equaled the record on his  3rd attempt of the day.

Historical Tidbit:

EDUCATION IN 1647

Education for all was an early American ideal.  As early as 1647 Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law mandating that all towns with more than 50 families set up a school.  If a town didn't comply with the law, they were fined five Pounds.

"That in whatsoever township in this government consist of 50 families or upwards.  Where there were families of 100 or more, Latin must be offered in Grammar School to prepare for the University.  The town was responsible for making a reasonable appropriation.  The profits from the Cape Fisheries, hereto ordered to maintain a Grammar School, shall be distributed to such towns as to have such Grammar Schools, not exceeding five Pounds per annum to any one town."

Before that time, small classes were held in private homes.

Transportation Notice for B-R Students

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The pay to ride registration program was extended in Bridgewater during the month of May due to the impact of the partial roof collapse at the Mitchell Elementary School. Please note that the deadline for payment which was originally scheduled for May 29, 2015 was too short a period of time for families to respond. In order to assist families with their planning for next school year's transportation, the payment deadline will be extended through August 15, 2015.

It is important, however, that you submit your registration forms as soon as possible in June so that routing arrangements can be made in time for bus information to be sent home with students at the end of the school year. Pay to ride registration is for all students living less than one mile and a half (1.5) from their school of attendance in grades Kindergarten through grade 12. If you have a form that indicates the district will pay for Kindergarten, this form is out of date and does not reflect the current Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee policy. New forms are available online or by request.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely yours,

Kathleen A. Macedo
Director of Business Services

Bridgewater State University will be giving out thirteen $1,000 scholarships to seniors graduating from Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School who have been accepted to BSU.

We are looking forward to welcoming these students to BSU!

A special reception is planned for June 17th to welcome the students and their families.  Highlights of the partnerships between BSU and the Town of Bridgewater will be presented and

opportunities discussed.

Help Wanted

Not only does the Bridgewater Arts & Music Festival have a good day full of events and all but they are also seeking some volunteers on July 4th (or 5th) and "paid" volunteers.

Paid volunteers will get $100-$120 for the day, $15/hourly from 7am-to roughly 3pm. There is a need for one or maybe two. The 7am start is non-negotiable, but the day can end earlier if he/she/they would prefer.

The tasks involved will be early in the a.m. between 7am and 9am and will include setting up of chairs, tables, assisting vendors with locating their spot on the quad etc., helping with the art show setup.

Once the setup is done, the person or people would be responsible for being another set of eyes for anything that looks out of place or in need of attention.

If interested, please email Nora Tarr by clicking here.

Bone Health Presentation

Tuesday, June 9 at 6:30pm

Bridgewater Public Library

The Bridgewater Public Library will offer a public education program on dealing with the symptoms of osteoporosis

"Fit to a T: What You Need to Know About Bone Health" is sponsored by the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI)/ The USBJI is a network of 100 professional healthcare, patient and public organizations raising awareness of musculoskeletal health, prevention education and research.

Osteoporosis is the most prevalent bone condition among Americans. Nearly one in two women, and one in four men,are likely to suffer from it. Osteoporosis can be debilitating or disabling due to the high incidence of broken bones in people with low bone mass. Prevention education is essential to lowering the number of people with low bone mass and broken bones.

"Fit to a T" is the USBJI's response to the Surgeon General's first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis. In partnership with the Public Library Association and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine this education program is called "Fit to a T" because the T-score is the measure of a person's bone density and susceptibility to fragility fracture. "Fit to a T" will be presented by Dr. James O'Neil, PharmD., owner/operator of Bridgewater Patient Advocacy and Wellness Services in Bridgewater.

The program will be held in the library's Flora T. Little Meeting Room on the lower level. Parking is available in back of the library, located at 15 South Street.

Recreation Commission Summer Program

The Bridgewater Recreation Commission presents their annual summertime program.  This program involves children  ages 5 (by Oct 1, 2015) through 14 years of age in a wide range of activities and events each day.

We explore the community around us and what it has to offer.  Children have the chance to meet new friends and have fun while giving you the freedom to do your business.

The program hours are  8:30 AM until 12:30 PM Monday through Friday.  Program runs weekly for eight weeks starting Monday, June 29, and continues to Friday, August 21, 2015.

No program on Friday July 3rd. Children and parents can choose a schedule to fit your plans.  Choose a 5 day week, any 4 day week, or any  3 day week.  The 2 day program will be available as space allows.  Children can attend for a week, all eight weeks or any number of weeks.

Middle School Sports Fees Notification

Dear Parents/Guardians,

At the last Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee meeting on May 20, 2015, the School Committee unanimously voted to increase the Middle School Sports fees as of August 1, 2015 as follows:

* A $300.00 per student/per sport fee will be implemented with no student/family cap.

* A minimum of fifteen (15) student participants must be paid in full before each season will commence. If the minimum paid student participation is not met, the sport will be cancelled.

The purpose of the increase is to cover the costs of the self-funded Middle School Sports Program. Although, we can agree that sports are an integral part of a student's "School Life", the expenses incurred by the program are not in keeping with the revenue generated, thereby creating a burden on the District's operational budget. The District cannot run a deficit; therefore, the newly instituted fee structure will be piloted during the 2015-2016 school year.

Further funding via a concerted parent/guardian fundraising effort will be instrumental in the continuance of school-based athletic opportunities at the middle school level. The program will require approximately $2,000.00 in fundraising revenue from both Bridgewater and Raynham to offset program costs.

With the assistance of fundraising efforts and the increase in fees, our plan is that the Middle School Sports programs will once again be self-sustaining and our students will continue to have the opportunity to participate in a school-based athletic program. Thank you for your continued support of the District.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline B. Forbes, Ph.D.

Superintendent of Schools
