West Bridgewater Little League Opening Day

Honors Linda Dubin

Linda Dubin & Jamie Mitchenson.

Long-time Principal Linda Dubin Honored
at WBYAA Opening Day
Most West Bridgewater parents recognize Linda Dubin as Rose L. MacDonald School principal and many remember her as a reading specialist in the late 1990s. But now Dubin has a new image in town: a competent pitcher who held her own on West Bridgewater's Youth Athletic Association Opening Day.
Retiring this June after 30+ years in the West Bridgewater school system, Dubin was chosen for the ceremonial opening day first pitch.
"I was thrilled and honored to be asked to throw the first pitch for the WBYAA," said Dubin. "The association symbolizes so much what is special about WB and the spirit of our small family-centered community," said Dubin.
"Admittedly, I was a bit worried about my throwing skills, so I asked our P.E. Teacher Mrs. DePaola for some private tutoring and then practiced!" laughed Dubin. Her practice paid off as the pitch arrived strong and centered over the plate.
"It is a memory I will treasure," said Dubin.

Morgan sings the National Anthem beautifully!
Little League Teams enjoyed day with all it's fun, especially the visit from Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster.

EDUCATION IN 1647

Education for all was an early American ideal.  As early as 1647, Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law mandating that all towns with more than 50 families set up a school.  If a town didn't comply with the law, they were fined five Pounds.

"That in whatsoever township in this government consist of 50 families or upwards.  Where there were families of 100 or more, Latin must be offered in Grammar School to prepare for the University. The town was responsible for making a reasonable appropriation. The profits from the Cape Fisheries, hereto ordered to maintain a Grammar School, shall be distributed to such towns as to have such Grammar Schools, not exceeding five Pounds per annum to any one town."

Before that time, small classes were held in private homes.

                Massachusetts Walking Tour Concert
June 26th@ 6pm
West Bridgewater Public Library

Sponsored by The Friends of the West Bridgewater Public Library in collaboration with the West Bridgewater Cultural Counci.
Since 2010, co-founders Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards have organized an annual non-profit bipedal concert tour of Massachusetts in support of arts and culture for towns throughout the state. Each free community concert collaborates with local artists, musicians, educational programs, trail managers and land trust groups to highlight both artistic diversity and recreational land use. With each visit, a community has pulled together and taken part in a dialogue which serves to strengthen local investment in the arts.

People still ask "so you actually walk?" YES, with our instruments, and camping gear, to each and every show - and after 8-13 miles of hiking roads and trailways, we perform a concert.

"Well, how does that support the arts?" Each Walking Tour event is a collaboration of cultural movers and shakers such as local artists, art organizations, trail volunteers, cultural council members, and school systems for an evening of shared ideas, stories, and song - thanks to state grants and private trusts, the concerts are always FREE for the communities we visit.

We are looking for local artist, musician, and poets to participate in this free community concert as a sign of support for our local arts.  All interested parties should contact Mark Mandeville @ mark@masswalkingtour.org.  Additional details about the
Massachusetts Walking Tour Concert
and the Nunckatessett Greenway project (Bay Circuit Trail) are provided below.

Mass Walking Tour, June 26th @ 6PM at W.B. Public Library
  • Nunckatessett Greenway Project (part of the Bay Circuit Trail) enhances recreational, environmental, social, and educational opportunities, and also stimulates economic activity in the town of West Bridgewater and Bridgewater. The genesis of the project stems from a grassroots movement of local residents and public officials that wish to see a nature corridor that will elevate people's awareness of the Town River and of historical sites situated along that river, as well as promote outdoor classrooms, economic development and alternative means of travel. www.nunckatessettgreenway.org/resources/videos

We look forward to seeing you at this event and for supporting the local arts.

Eat Healthy & Get Moving!

It is finally feeling like summer! The farmer's markets are opening and there are lots of people out walking, running, hiking and cycling.

To help everyone move more and eat healthier the Turn the Tide Foundation has a number of resources on their website. click here for website

These include: ABC for Fitness© (Activity Bursts in the Classroom,) A-B-E for Fitness (Activity Bursts Everywhere,) Nutrition Detectives® Teaching Kids to Make Healthy Choices, UnJunk Yourself, and more.  The ABC For Fitness© and the A-B-E for Fitness are designed to help youth and adults add in movement to days when they are sitting in class or the office.

The Nutrition Detectives® is a program for elementary age students to help them learn to read food labels.   The Unjunk Yourself program is designed to help youth learn important health messages on nutrition and physical activity through music and dance video clips. They have just released a new video entitled "I'm an Animal," it is just under 3 minutes in length and highlights the need for us all to consume "real" food vs. processed food.  To view the videos from Turn the Tide FoundationUnJunk Yourself, including "I'm an Animal," visit: click here

Turn the Tide Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization created to help combat obesity by developing, evaluating, and disseminating creative, yet practical programs that can be used in the real world, by real people, for free.

"Perfection of effort is not required, by the way. It is the consistency... like anything else. If I want to tone muscle, lifting a ten-pound weight a few times every day will move me toward my goal much quicker than hoisting a fifty-pound barbell once a week. Yes, it really is true: 'Slow and steady wins the race.' Just try a little, every day. You'll see." Holly Mosier
