Historical Tidbit:

EDUCATION IN 1647

Education for all was an early American ideal.

As early as 1647, Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law mandating that all towns with more than 50 families set up a school.

If a town didn't comply with the law, they were fined five Pounds.

"That in whatsoever township in this government consist of 50 families or upwards.  Where there were families of 100 or more, Latin must be offered in Grammar School to prepare for the University.

The town was responsible for making a reasonable appropriation.

The profits from the Cape Fisheries, hereto ordered to maintain a Grammar School, shall be distributed to such towns as to have such Grammar Schools, not exceeding five Pounds per annum to any one town."

The first town record concerning formal education in Halifax was made on December 4, 1732.  Before that time, small classes were held in private homes.

Monponsett Pond Testing

In connection with water quality issues at Monponsett Pond, the
following treatments have been tentatively scheduled: Tuesday, June 2 - West Monponsett - aluminum sulfate to reduce the amount of free phosphorous (nutrient for algae) and Thursday, May 28 - East Monponsett - Sonar herbicde treatment to reduce invasive weed growth. Any changes to this schedule will be posted.

Aquatic Control Technology has to reschedule the West Monponsett buffered alum treatment. Its biologist reminded the firm that per the accepted monitoring plan ACT has to monitor the mussels 24 and 72 hours after the treatment. With treatment on a Wednesday that puts the 72 hour data collection on a Saturday when lake usage is likely to be high (not the best for SCUBA diver data collection), so ACT has to reschedule the treatment to Tuesday, June 2nd. Sorry for the confusion and the quick change of date. The East Monponsett treatment date will stay the same...(Thursday 5/28).

These treatments do not affect the Town's drinking water. The Town does not use Monponsett Pond as a water supply. The orange posters and information are specific about not using the POND for drinking water.

"Perfection of effort is not required, by the way. It is the consistency... like anything else. If I want to tone muscle, lifting a ten-pound weight a few times every day will move me toward my goal much quicker than hoisting a fifty-pound barbell once a week. Yes, it really is true: 'Slow and steady wins the race.' Just try a little, every day. You'll see." Holly Mosier

Halifax Congregational Church Needs Your Beautiful Singing Voice & Musical Inklings

Help is needed for the church music ministry.

First, we are seeking choir members. If you enjoy singing and would like to be an active participant in the morning worship, this is the place for you. The choir rehearses each Sunday morning at 8:45 AM. No previous experience is necessary. If you would like to lend your voice to the service contact Bob Kniffen (781-293-3147) for further information. Rehearsals will resume on Sunday, September 14.

We are also in need of handbell players. Rehearsals are Sunday evenings 6:30-8:00 PM. While the technique of playing the bells is fairly easy to learn, it is helpful if you can read music. For more information also contact Bob Kniffen (781-293-3147)

Both groups are important parts of the music ministry of the church and a lot of fun as well.
