Historical Tidbit:

EDUCATION IN 1647

Education for all was an early American ideal.

As early as 1647, Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law mandating that all towns with more than 50 families set up a school.

If a town didn't comply with the law, they were fined five Pounds.

"That in whatsoever township in this government consist of 50 families or upwards.  Where there were families of 100 or more, Latin must be offered in Grammar School to prepare for the University.

The town was responsible for making a reasonable appropriation.

The profits from the Cape Fisheries, hereto ordered to maintain a Grammar School, shall be distributed to such towns as to have such Grammar Schools, not exceeding five Pounds per annum to any one town."

Before that time, small classes were held in private homes.

Notice from the Superintendent

Dear Parents/Guardians,

At the last Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee meeting on May 20, 2015, the School Committee unanimously voted to increase the Middle School Sports fees as of August 1, 2015 as follows:

* A $300.00 per student/per sport fee will be implemented with no student/family cap.

* A minimum of fifteen (15) student participants must be paid in full before each season will commence. If the minimum paid student participation is not met, the sport will be cancelled.

The purpose of the increase is to cover the costs of the self-funded Middle School Sports Program. Although, we can agree that sports are an integral part of a student's "School Life", the expenses incurred by the program are not in keeping with the revenue generated, thereby creating a burden on the District's operational budget. The District cannot run a deficit; therefore, the newly instituted fee structure will be piloted during the 2015-2016 school year.

Further funding via a concerted parent/guardian fundraising effort will be instrumental in the continuance of school-based athletic opportunities at the middle school level. The program will require approximately $2,000.00 in fundraising revenue from both Bridgewater and Raynham to offset program costs.

With the assistance of fundraising efforts and the increase in fees, our plan is that the Middle School Sports programs will once again be self-sustaining and our students will continue to have the opportunity to participate in a school-based athletic program. Thank you for your continued support of the District.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline B. Forbes, Ph.D.

Superintendent of Schools

Eat Healthy & Get Moving!

vegetables

It is finally feeling like summer! The farmer's markets are opening and there are lots of people out walking, running, hiking and cycling.

To help everyone move more and eat healthier the Turn the Tide Foundation has a number of resources on their website. click here for website

These include: ABC for Fitness© (Activity Bursts in the Classroom,) A-B-E for Fitness (Activity Bursts Everywhere,) Nutrition Detectives® Teaching Kids to Make Healthy Choices, UnJunk Yourself, and more.  The ABC For Fitness© and the A-B-E for Fitness are designed to help youth and adults add in movement to days when they are sitting in class or the office.

The Nutrition Detectives® is a program for elementary age students to help them learn to read food labels.   The Unjunk Yourself program is designed to help youth learn important health messages on nutrition and physical activity through music and dance video clips. They have just released a new video entitled "I'm an Animal," it is just under 3 minutes in length and highlights the need for us all to consume "real" food vs. processed food.  To view the videos from Turn the Tide FoundationUnJunk Yourself, including "I'm an Animal," visit: click here

UWGAT (United Way of Greater Attleboro/ Taunton)  Annual Meeting & Campaign Celebration
TuesdayMay 19, 2015

Our United Way 's 73rd Annual Meeting & Campaign Celebration event at the Holiday Inn in Taunton, MA, with approximately 225 guests.  UWGAT gave out Red Noses to everyone to celebrate Red Nose Day on Thursday 5/21.  *Red Nose Day is a campaign dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty by simply having fun and making people laugh. The inaugural Red Nose Day was held in the US on May 21st, 2015.
Thank you to all who attended and support our work in the community!  During the breakfast, UWGAT welcomed and installed new board directors: Kevin Cryan, Owner, Cryan Landscape Contractors; and Nelson Tavares, Vice President of Lending & Retail Administration, Taunton Federal Credit Union.
"Perfection of effort is not required, by the way. It is the consistency... like anything else. If I want to tone muscle, lifting a ten-pound weight a few times every day will move me toward my goal much quicker than hoisting a fifty-pound barbell once a week. Yes, it really is true: 'Slow and steady wins the race.' Just try a little, every day. You'll see." Holly Mosier

PLEASE CALL 508-824-2740 FOR DAY AND TlME

Dear Bridgewater Raynham Parents and Guardians:

The pay to ride registration program was extended in Bridgewater during the month of May due to the impact of the partial roof collapse at the Mitchell Elementary School. Please note that the deadline for payment which was originally scheduled for May 29, 2015 was too short a period of time for families to respond. In order to assist families with their planning for next school year's transportation, the payment deadline will be extended through August 15, 2015.

It is important, however, that you submit your registration forms as soon as possible in June so that routing arrangements can be made in time for bus information to be sent home with students at the end of the school year. Pay to ride registration is for all students living less than one mile and a half (1.5) from their school of attendance in grades Kindergarten through grade 12. If you have a form that indicates the district will pay for Kindergarten, this form is out of date and does not reflect the current Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee policy. New forms are available online or by request.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely yours,

Kathleen A. Macedo
Director of Business Services
