Historical Tidbit:
June 6th D-Day

The day the Allied powers crossed the English Channel and landed on five beach- heads along Normandy, France.
Operation Overlord began the night of June 5th, and at dawn on June 6, 18,000 parachutists were already on the ground; the land invasions began at 6:30 a.m. The British and Canadians overcame
light opposition to capture Gold, Juno and Sword beaches; so did the Americans at Utah beach. The task was much tougher at Omaha beach, however, where 2,000 troops were lost. It was only through the tenacity and ingenuity of troops on the ground that the objective was
achieved.  By day's end, 155,000 Allied American, British, and Canadians had successfully stormed Normandy's beaches. Within three months, the northern part of France would be freed and the invasion force was pushing ever forward, ultimately into Germany and the end of the Nazi scourge of Europe.

It is finally feeling like summer! The farmer's markets are opening and there are lots of people out walking, running, hiking and cycling.

To help everyone move more and eat healthier the Turn the Tide Foundation has a number of resources on their website. click here for website

These include: ABC for Fitness© (Activity Bursts in the Classroom,) A-B-E for Fitness (Activity Bursts Everywhere,) Nutrition Detectives® Teaching Kids to Make Healthy Choices, UnJunk Yourself, and more.  The ABC For Fitness© and the A-B-E for Fitness are designed to help youth and adults add in movement to days when they are sitting in class or the office.

The Nutrition Detectives® is a program for elementary age students to help them learn to read food labels.   The Unjunk Yourself program is designed to help youth learn important health messages on nutrition and physical activity through music and dance video clips. They have just released a new video entitled "I'm an Animal," it is just under 3 minutes in length and highlights the need for us all to consume "real" food vs. processed food.  To view the videos from Turn the Tide FoundationUnJunk Yourself, including "I'm an Animal," visit: click here

A Conversation with Brockton Rox Host Family

Sara & Michael Kelly from Raynham

Sara & Michael hosted 3 Brockton Rox baseball players during 2014 and they will be hosting 2 players this June, July & part of August.
We asked why host, they told us:  "We decided to try it last year because we had hosted Chinese exchange teachers for Brockton Public Schools for 6 years and found it to be a wonderful experience.
We enjoy the Rox games thought it might be fun."
Sara shared with us that  three players last season were from New Jersey. They all knew each other from high school ball playing. "We got to meet their families and enjoyed our time with them."
And then there are the benefits: "The Rox organization was very welcoming to host families and we all sat together at the games. We have become good friends with several of the other host families. The best thing was the shared camaraderie with the other host families and the fun we all had at the games."

The Brockton Rox are still looking for wonderful host families for our 2015 team!  Our players come from all over the country and are looking to have a fantastic summer of baseball and fun!  Our hosts can live as far as 30 minutes away, and the host family benefits include a cash stipend, season tickets, and merchandise discounts as well as great host family events!

If you are interested, please contact Kate Thomas, Assistant General Manager, at kthomas@brocktonrox.com or 508-559-7001.
