Historical Tidbit:
mothers-day-flower-header2.jpgMother's Day

Mother's Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908.   Following her mother's 1905 death, Anna conceived Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children and their families.          After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia.  That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother's Day event at one of Wanamaker's retail stores in Philadelphia.

Mother's Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.  The holiday continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers. Families might also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores. At times Mother's Day has also been a date for launching political or feminist causes. In 1968, Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr., used Mother's Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children.  In the 1970's, women's groups also used the holiday as a time to highlight the need for equal rights and access to childcare.

Get Active

soccer-boy-banner.jpg

Physical activity, good nutrition, and a healthy body weight are essential parts of a person's overall health and well-being. Children need 60 minutes of activity, and adults need 30 minutes of activity daily. Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bones, muscle joint development, and decreases the risk of obesity. Being active for 60 minutes each day may sound like a lot, but it doesn't need to happen at one time. It could be 10 minute intervals throughout the day. One doesn't need to be an athlete to be physically active. Regardless of age and ability, being physically active and eating right provides long term health benefits for everyone. Being active alone, with a friend or with your family produces the winning results of physical fitness. Some simple steps you can make with your family:  walk the dog, plant a garden, jump rope, play ball, or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Redirect use of electronic devices to create movement: Count your steps using a cell phone app; seek exercise or dance activities on the gaming system or local cable channels. When we get moving, we're more likely to: feel less stressed; feel better about ourselves; keep a healthy weight; build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints; and sleep better at night. Get moving; together we can take the steps for a healthier future one day at a time.

"When your mother asks, 'Do you want a piece of advice?' it's a mere formality. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway."

"Think for a minute, darling: in fairy tales it's always the children who have the fine adventures. The mothers have to stay at home and wait for the children to fly in the window."

"I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars."

The Bridgewater Public Library will feature an exhibition of international labor movement posters from Stephen Lewis' collection

facebook.com/Lewisposters

in the Flora T. Little Gallery.

The exhibition will be on display through May and June.

The posters in this exhibition are from a collection of more than 4,500 of Stephen Lewis, a long-time activist in the labor movement and the former Treasurer of his union. Stephen has exhibited at a number of public libraries in Massachusetts, two of the state Heritage parks and at Boston City Hall. Lewis has presented at the annual conference of the National Council on Public History and on local cable television programs.

According to Lewis, the posters/photos were contributed by friends, collected at conferences, visits to some of the organizations, and from connections made through the internet.

The Flora T. Little Gallery is open to the public during regular library hours: Monday-Wednesday 9a.m.-8p.m.; Thursday 10a.m.-5p.m., Friday-Saturday 10a.m.-2p.m. Parking is available in back of the library.

Grade 12 Community Service Deadline

This is a reminder that all BR seniors  must complete a min. of 15 hours of community service each year.  Many seniors have not submitted their community service hours for this year and as a result may not graduate which means students will not walk at the graduation ceremony nor receive a diploma until this graduation obligation is met. Students need to submit their hours by Friday, May 15th.  If you have any questions please see your guidance counselor or Mrs. Maxwell.
