West Bridgewater Goodbye Ceremony for the Old

WB Jr/ Sr High School.

Alumni From Across the Ages Honor their Alma Mater.

Memories Past and Present Bond Wildcats at School Farewell
Returning to their old high school was like revisiting an old friend for hundreds of West Bridgewater Middle-Senior and Howard High School graduates this weekend.
Months of planning and historical research culminated in a huge farewell event on Saturday, drawing alumni from all over the country.
The event featured presentations by the superintendent, present and past principals, and Athletic Hall of Fame Chairman Forrest Broman, as well as tributes to legacy teachers and coaches with 30+ years of service in the school the launch of the school's first Athletic Hall of Fame, and an evening social.
The school's heritage committee, led by history teacher and chair John Nenopoulos created a historical DVD-preserving artifacts and other memories from 63 years of school life in the hallways, classrooms, on stage and on the athletic fields.
For long-time principal Erick Benson (who served from 1971 until 1993) education is timeless, but the tools and technology have changed.
"Teaching and learning remain constant," said Benson, "but the tools have become more sophisticated."  "This building, in its 63 years, has served the youth, and on occasion, the adults well," said Benson.
Superintendent Patty Oakley praised the excellence of memorable teachers with a tell-tale PowerPoint slide that summed up the impact of teachers on students. "A mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains, a superior teacher demonstrates, but a great teachers inspires," read Oakley to the packed auditorium of alumni, faculty, staff, and other community members.
Among those recognized for 30+ years in teaching were Ed Sarro, Robert Chapman, Anne Kelly, Ron Broman, Pat Conniff, Denise Boutin, Nancy Emord, and Steve Barrett.
Class of 1966 alumna Fran (Finch) Silvia traveled from North Carolina to visit old friends and neighbors at the farewell event. Seeing her favorite teacher, Mr. Chapman, was a welcome surprise.
"This is like seeing an old friend, but with mixed emotions because the school is going to be taken down," said Judy (Anderson) Sullivan '66, who now resides in Cotuit. "It was great seeing classmates and old neighbors and being back home," said Sullivan.
Crowds gathered outside the school at 5:00 p.m. to take a special aerial photograph of the old building before it is taken down this summer.
"This is a great weekend for WB and wildcat spirit," said Oakley. "We're here to cherish the 63 years that have been spent in this building-the memories and the relationships," said Oakley, "and today we take time to celebrate."
"Those memories will live on and a new generation of memories will be made in our new facility," said Oakley.
Three elements at West Bridgewater make the school the "best one in the state", according to Principal Mark Bodwell. "Our dedicated teachers, amazing students, and supportive community make this school what it is," said Bodwell.
Benson praised the new building, near completion, as a "wonderful resource" for future students.
"I'm happy the town is entrusting such a wonderful resource to the teachers and students of West Bridgewater," said Benson, '52.
Marilyn Raleigh '56 found the farewell event to offer a bit of déjà vu for her family. "My father was on the building committee for the existing school and now I'm on the committee for the new school," said Raleigh. "We've got a lot of great memories and a great school system," said Raleigh.
"Patty Oakley has been great," said Raleigh; "she wants us to share all the good memories and not just have a building torn down."
Joe Souza '51 reminisced about his glory days in high school football, saying "I'm from the only undefeated football team in West Bridgewater."
High school sweethearts Tricia (Moreira) and Bob Williams '80 enjoyed coming back to school to see old friends and rekindle high school memories. The couple recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Williams' father, Eldon Moreira continues to serve on the town's Board of Selectmen.
"This building has seen graduations, proms, floods, and renovations," said Bodwell, "wonderful plays and concerts and athletic championships and has been graced by thousands of students and staff who made it special with their presence.
Selectman Jerry Lawrence saw the bittersweet in the school farewell, but is excited for the years ahead.
"I've been on a tour of the new school and see years of great memories ahead for future kids," said Lawrence.

"I'm so excited we could bring all these people together and spend time with classmates and remember the great town we have and say goodbye to the school we spent so much time in," said Selectwoman Nancy Maloney.

These wonderful photographs were taken by Kristin Basford, and aerial shots were possible through the efforts of pilot Jim Moore.

Mothers Day

Mother's Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world.  The American incarnation of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908.  Following her mother's 1905 death, Anna conceived Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children and their families.         After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother's Day event at one of Wanamaker's retail stores in Philadelphia.

Mother's Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.  The holiday continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers. Families might also celebrate by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores.  At times Mother's Day has also been a date for launching political or feminist causes. In 1968, Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King Jr., used Mother's Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children.  In the 1970's, women's groups also used the holiday as a time to highlight the need for equal rights and access to childcare.

Get Active

soccer-boy-banner.jpg

Physical activity, good nutrition, and a healthy body weight are essential parts of a person's overall health and well-being. Children need 60 minutes of activity, and adults need 30 minutes of activity daily. Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bones, muscle joint development, and decreases the risk of obesity. Being active for 60 minutes each day may sound like a lot, but it doesn't need to happen at one time. It could be 10 minute intervals throughout the day. One doesn't need to be an athlete to be physically active. Regardless of age and ability, being physically active and eating right provides long term health benefits for everyone. Being active alone, with a friend or with your family produces the winning results of physical fitness. Some simple steps you can make with your family:  walk the dog, plant a garden, jump rope, play ball, or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Redirect use of electronic devices to create movement: Count your steps using a cell phone app; seek exercise or dance activities on the gaming system or local cable channels. When we get moving, we're more likely to: feel less stressed; feel better about ourselves; keep a healthy weight; build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints; and sleep better at night. Get moving; together we can take the steps for a healthier future one day at a time.

WB High School Juniors visited Washington DC over April vacation. It was a great trip!

Our home delivered meals program, also know as "Meals on Wheels", are designed to provide just the right combination of good nutrition and a friendly visitor for people 60+ who may not have enough food, be able to prepare their own food, or understand the proper nutritional requirements as they are advancing in age.

We deliver meals based on need, so whether long or short term, we can help you or a loved one eat properly.  Whether recovering from surgery or an illness, or just not having the mobility to get to the market on a regular basis, Meals on Wheels is there to support seniors in our communities

All meals served meet one-third of a participant's daily nutritional requirements and are designed to be low in sodium, fat, and sugar.  And if the participant's doctor requests a diabetic diet plan, we can usually accommodate that by offering a modified meal.    www.sselder.org

"When your mother asks, 'Do you want a piece of advice?' it's a mere formality. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway."

"Think for a minute, darling: in fairy tales it's always the children who have the fine adventures. The mothers have to stay at home and wait for the children to fly in the window."

"I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars."
