Historical Tidbit:

Bristol County

Raynham is part of Bristol County, which encompasses three cities and 17 towns.  Bristol County was formed in 1685, the same year as Plymouth and Barnstable Counties.

The first counties in America were formed in 1643 & they are Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk.   There are several reasons for a state to divide into counties; it allowed for greater power and extended authority farther than an individual town had; it also facilitated a Probate Court for civil and criminal matters and allowed assigned officers to serve more effectively in regard to territorial conflicts.

The courts for Bristol County are held in Taunton and New Bedford.  The name "county" comes from England.  In England, areas were divided into territories owned by an Earl or Count ("County").  Each Count assigned a representative officer referred to as "shire-reeve" (or "sheriff").  The town where the court for the county is held is called "shire town."
