Buzz Around Bridgewater, MA
Hats off to all the Bridgewater folks who organized impromptu Earth Day
clean ups and spruce ups.
Your efforts are part of a 45 year Earth Day tradition.

A little History of the day: Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson suggested in a speech a day for "serious discussion of environmental problems."  What surprised Nelson - and others - was the response.   All over the country, on April 22, 1970, college campuses and public places  were vibrant with people.  In New York City's Central Park and Fifth Avenue 100,000 people staged a quiet, contemplative parade.  Remember, this event pre-dated the internet; word was spread and reacted on, nation wide,  through newspapers, radio, TV and phone calls.

But this didn't "just happen" according to Senator Nelson, he had been working on it for 7 years. Back in Sept 1963, he and President John  F. Kennedy held a  five-day, eleven-state conservation tour.  That tour "was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day."  For the following  years, Sen. Nelson spoke on environmental issues to a variety of audiences all across the country. Then, in September 1969, he announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. "The wire services carried the story from coast to coast.  The response was electric.  It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air - and they did so with spectacular exuberance,"  said Nelson.

Senator Nelson said: "Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level.  We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day.  It organized itself."

While on April 22, 1970, there were educational lectures and nature walks, there were also more dramatic demonstrations drawing attention to  environmental issues. According to the New York Times, some activists held "mock funerals of 'polluting' objects, from automobiles to toilets."

Per TIME Magazine, some of the most noteworthy demonstrations were held by college students. They collected piles of litter and  staged "dump-ins'" on the steps of city halls and manufacturing facilities. On a San Fernando State College sidewalk, people were
offered rice and tea to as a sample of the "hunger diet," as overpopulation  will lead to worldwide famine.  At Florida Technological University, a mock trial was held for a Chevrolet charged with air poisoning.  When found guilty, they tried to execute it with a sledgehammer - but according to TIME, "the car resisted so sturdily that the students finally shrugged and offered it to an art class for a sculpture project."

For the past 45 years, folks have attended lectures, held clean-ups and spent the day at events to raise awareness of environmental issues and take care of our #1 resource.

The Earth.

This historic treasure is the Memorial Building, which has served as the meeting space for the Board of Selectmen and now serves as the new home for the Town Council.  It originally served as a library prior to the construction of the new library next door.  The Memorial Building is a Civil War Memorial and was dedicated in 1882 to fallen soldiers that fought in the Civil War.  Etched on marble outside of the front doors of the building are the names of 36 deceased soldiers.

Appomattox at 150

Tuesday, April 28 at 7pm

Bridgewater Public Library

15 South Street

The Bridgewater Public Library announces that historian Dr. Gary Hylander will present "Appomattox at 150" in the Flora T. Little Meeting Room. The public is invited to attend.

April of this year marks the sesquicentennial of General Lee's surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Court House in southern Virginia. Grant, who had just ridden in from the field in his mud-spattered private's uniform was more unkempt than usual. Waiting for him in the parlor of the McClean farmhouse was Lee spotless in his dress uniform and wearing his dress sword. The two men sat down and agreed upon the terms of surrender. Grant was generous. The War Between The States was over.
Gary L. Hylander earned his PhD at Boston College. His advisor and dissertation director was the noted Boston historian Thomas H. O'Connor. Hylander is currently an independent scholar who specializes as a presidential historian, pedagogical specialist for the NEH, and professor of history at Framingham State University. He is a frequent presenter at library forums, historical societies, senior living centers, civic and professional organizations as well as a public affairs commentator on local cable news and radio.

"Appomattox at 150" is sponsored by the Friends of the Bridgewater Public Library.

Parking is available in back of the library, located at 15 South Street.

 Suffolk County.

Bridgewater's current OBOC selection is:  Cold Case to Case Closed: Lizbeth Borden, a historical novel by Richard Little and Beverley Folstad.  It focuses on the infamous double murder case in Fall River in 1892.  Andrew Jackson Borden and his second wife, Abby Borden, were murdered in their own home.  Their daughter, Lizzie, was the prime suspect.  Eventually acquitted in the courtroom, she was condemned in the Court of Public Opinion.  Many books have been written about the case.

This is the 10th anniversary of Bridgewater's One Book One Community partnership. Additional information about Cold Case to Case Closed and the OBOC program can be found: www.bridgewaterpubliclibrary.org Parking is available in back of the library. 508-697-3331 Fax: 508-279-1467

McElwain School Reuse Plan - The town needs your input!

The Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) to Town Manager Dutton has been charged by Town Manager Dutton to "take on" the disposal/use of the old McElwain School Building on Main Street.

The CDAC needs public participation to guide the process. However, after this crazy winter, the CDAX wondered if a large group would turn out for a meeting. So, in hopes of getting greater participation at cost savings, they have decided to try a new approach and created an on-line site where people can vote on ideas, give their reasons and create others ideas. www.tricider.com
The CDAC urges you to be part of this process!!! Think, talk, investigate then logon and let them hear your opinions.

See below for another link if you want to see interior photos of the building. AND, visit (and Like) the McElwain School---the Next Iteration Facebook page at
