Buzz Around Bridgewater, MA
  The Bridgewater Garden Club

The Club broke the winter weather with a house tour of four beautiful homes on March 28.  We thank all of those people who offered their homes, decorated the homes with the four motifs, bought tickets for the tour and, enjoyed the boutique and refreshments at the Senior Center.  The profits went to the scholarship fund and the beautification fund.  The Garden Club maintains the gardens at the Cole Yeaton Senior Center and at Hemlock Drive. Included are some pictures from the tour.

Hooper and Clark General Store

The building to the left of the picture is Hooper and Clark, Bridgewater's general store. This store was opened in 1775, replacing a smaller one on the site and ran until the 1920's.

We recently came across some ledgers of the store and were amazed to see the record of items sold to patrons. There was everything from ribbons and peanut butter to iron bars from the local ironworks.  It was also a bank before the day of the Bridgewater Savings Bank.  They actually made loans from the store, as it was connected with the financial resources of the ironworks.

It also served as the stage coach stop , so it was the source of information or news from outside the town before the days of newspapers.  Another interesting fact is that December 25th was a regular business day for these workers and there was no celebration of the Christmas holidays until the late 1800's.

Respectfully Submitted~David Moore

Trials & Tribulations: Examining the Borden Case With Judge Mark Lawton

Monday, May 4, 6:30pm

Bridgewater Public Library

15 South St.

Please join us at the Bridgewater Public Library for a One Book One Community program:  Trials and Tribulations:  Examining the Borden Case with Judge Mark Lawton.  Judge Lawton is a retired juvenile courts judge for

 Suffolk County.

Bridgewater's current OBOC selection is:  Cold Case to Case Closed: Lizbeth Borden, a historical novel by Richard Little and Beverley Folstad.  It focuses on the infamous double murder case in Fall River in 1892.  Andrew Jackson Borden and his second wife, Abby Borden, were murdered in their own home.  Their daughter, Lizzie, was the prime suspect.  Eventually acquitted in the courtroom, she was condemned in the Court of Public Opinion.  Many books have been written about the case.

This is the 10th anniversary of Bridgewater's One Book One Community partnership. Additional information about Cold Case to Case Closed and the OBOC program can be found: www.bridgewaterpubliclibrary.org Parking is available in back of the library. 508-697-3331 Fax: 508-279-1467

McElwain School Reuse Plan - The town needs your input!

The Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) to Town Manager Dutton has been charged by Town Manager Dutton to "take on" the disposal/use of the old McElwain School Building on Main Street.

The CDAC needs public participation to guide the process. However, after this crazy winter, the CDAX wondered if a large group would turn out for a meeting. So, in hopes of getting greater participation at cost savings, they have decided to try a new approach and created an on-line site where people can vote on ideas, give their reasons and create others ideas. www.tricider.com
The CDAC urges you to be part of this process!!! Think, talk, investigate then logon and let them hear your opinions.

See below for another link if you want to see interior photos of the building. AND, visit (and Like) the McElwain School---the Next Iteration Facebook page at
