Now that's what you call a Plop!

Thank you all so much to everyone who helped make our "Plop for HOPS" such a huge success this weekend. It really was a great day.

came through.  Mother Nature

finally cut us all a break... and we raised some serious money for the Halifax Open Play Space.

We are still tallying things up, but it appears the Friends of HOPS took in a little over $9,000!

 Cow Plop indeed!

HISTORICAL TIDBIT:    LYONVILLE

Lyonville is located at the east end of Old Plymouth Street in Halifax and ends at the corner of Elm Street. This area was designated as a historic district after the town adopted the Historic District Commission's request to establish districts at the annual town meeting May 14, 2001. The name "Lyonville" was chosen after a request was made to name the area after the Obadiah Lyon family that lived along that stretch of Old Plymouth Street for decades.

Obadiah Lyon was a farmer who moved to Halifax in the late 1700's.

In 1832, at the east end of the street there were four houses.  Obadiah Lyon and his son, Alpha lived in two of these.  In 1846, Obadiah died, leaving his estate to his twelve children, but left the use of the farm to his wife until the youngest child became 21.

In 1855, the four houses had grown to six in the same neighborhood along with a shoe factory. These being: the original Obadiah Lyon homestead, (Obadiah having died by this time, his second wife, Sally Paddock Lyon and Obadiah's daughter Abigail were living in the homestead), a shoe shop run by Charles P. Lyon, Charles P. Lyon's house, the Parris family, Alpha and Henry Lyon (brother's sharing a house) all being on the North Side of the road. The Thomas family and Edwin Lyon living on the South Side.

In 1879, with the exception of Joseph Watson now living where the Thomas family lived.  As was the custom in those days a lot of land on the estate was given to each son as he married. In 1885, six of his children divided the farm.  1890 finds the son, George, living in his father's homestead. 1903shows four of these buildings were still owned by Lyon's.  Jared and Ella Baker had bought the Parris house by this time.

The following homes are still standing today in the Historic District named after the Lyon family.

Obadiah Lyon - 705 Old Plymouth Street

Shoe Shop - 709 Old Plymouth Street

Charles P. Lyon - 715 Old Plymouth Street

Edwin Lyon - 712 Old Plymouth Street

Alpha & Henry Lyon - 735 Old Plymouth Street

Lydia (Lyon) Watson - 748 Old Plymouth Street

(Growing up I often heard my grandfather and great uncles and great aunt refer to their neighborhood as Lyonville.)

Respectfully submitted, Sue Basille

                                   Volunteers needed

The Halifax Board of Selectmen is in search of volunteers to serve on the Halifax in Lights Committee. Halifax in Lights is the Town's summer celebration, usually held on or near July 4th each year. However, because of recent resignations, there are now just three members on the Committee and more members are needed in order for the event to occur this summer.
If you are interested in ensuring that there will be a Halifax in Lights in 2015, please contact the Selectmen's Office at 781-294-1316.
