Historical Tidbit :

A toll for a cookie or a cookie for a toll?

The first turnpike/toll road in this area was chartered in 1804, now known as Bedford Street (rte. 18).  Tolls were collected at a toll-gate or toll-house. A toll-keeper would collect 25 cents for every coach or other four wheel carriage, for the conveyance of persons. Other costs were included for stagecoaches.

Now for the Cookie part!  In 1930, Ruth and Kenneth Wakefield purchased the old Smith house on Bedford Sreet; at that time the area was part of East Bridgewater.  Even though they opened in the middle of the depression, the Toll House quickly became known. People filled the restaurant to get a fine full course meal, elegantly served,  for  only $1.

One day, having run out of bakers chocolate, Ruth substituted pieces of Nestle's semi sweet chocolate, assuming they would melt.  When they didn't melt and she served them anyway, the customers loved her cookies with the chunks of chocolate. The Wakefield's "Toll House Crunch Cookie" has become one of the greatest single contributions to the American desserts.  Ruth made a deal with Andrew Nestle, allowing him to print her recipe on there cookie packages.  In return, she received a life time supply of chocolate.

The Wakefields ran the restaurant until 1967, new owners ran it until it closed in 1971, then

it was destroyed by fire in 1984.

farmer rob          I wonder, on cool clear nights when stars are aligned just right, does a warm scent of sweet chocolate still drift in the air?

Experts have Agreed On The Best Ways to Prevent Concussion

A concussion is a brain injury; the only known cure is prevention. Helmets can protect against skull fractures and more serious brain injuries but cannot prevent a concussion; therefore, it is vitally important to be well-informed about prevention. Many products have claimed to prevent concussions but none have been substantiated.

Concussion Signs and Symptoms

There are a wide variety of signs and symptoms associated with concussions. No two concussions are the same and individuals may experience only some of the symptoms. Symptoms may not show up immediately; they may be noticed a few hours or days later. Exertion exacerbates symptoms. Remember: if a concussion is suspected, the athlete should be immediately removed from play!

Baseline Assessments/Cognitive Testing

Pre-season cognitive baseline testing is relatively new to youth sports. Typically a short computerized test administered prior to the beginning of the season, it measures selected brain processes and scores the test for each athlete to establish the athlete's baseline. If a concussion is suspected during the season, s/he can re-test. The computer software compares the baseline score to the re-test score and alerts the clinician of a reliable change in the score. Computerized cognitive testing can also be used during management/treatment even when a baseline has not been established. The changes/improvements in scores over time help to determine progress toward recovery. It is important to remember that computerized cognitive baseline testing is only a tool to be used by a trained clinician. It cannot diagnose a concussion and should always be used as one component of a concussion assessment.      www.sportsconcussion.com

Central School Gardeners

Free Field Trip to Soule Homestead

Thursday, April 23 12:30pm

Many of you remember the Central School Garden, an organic school garden that was dismantled 2 years ago to make way for our new Jr./ Sr. High School.  Although the garden no longer exists, its good work continues.  Bridgewater Savings Bank has generously allowed us to retain a grant in order that East Bridgewater students may continue to learn about organic gardening and continue to have an outdoor learning space.

To these ends:
*

Central School Gardeners Committee made a major contribution to Central School alum and Eagle Scout candidate Kevin Smith to re-create the courtyard at the Middle School.  The work is in progress, and the space will be made available for outdoor learning opportunities upon its completion.
*
Central School Gardeners Committee will provide funding for a field trip on Thursday, April 23rd (vacation week) from 12:30 to 2:00 PM to the Soule Homestead Educational Center, 20 minutes away in Middleboro, MA.  A program entitled "Meet the Animals" will be provided free of charge to Central School students, their parents, and their siblings.  Transportation and chaperoning are to be provided by parents of interested children.  Enrollment is limited, on a first-come, first-served basis.  If your family would like to participate, please contact CSG Committee member Korin Zigler at Mskzigler@aol.com

Ticks and Your Dog
A boy & his Dog

Ticks can transmit dangerous diseases when they attach to a host and feed.  A tick must be attached for several hours in order to transmit Lyme disease to a host. If you check your dog (and yourself) daily, you have a chance of finding and removing any ticks before they can transmit Lyme disease.

Even if you are using an effective tick control product, you should still check your dog daily for ticks and remove any as soon as you find them. You should never remove a tick with your fingers. Tweezers work well, but be sure to grasp the tick close to the head and pull gently to avoid leaving the mouthparts embedded in the skin. Tick removal tools are also very easy to use. Avoid using lighter fluid, matches, or other products that may irritate the skin or cause serious injuries to your dog. When in doubt, ask your veterinary care team for assistance removing the tick.

Humans are social animals; we need each other. Yet being there, listening and having compassion can be challenging...

"We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it."
~ John Lennon

"Intense love does not measure, it just gives."
~ Mother Teresa

"If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace."
~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Time spent nurturing a relationship, in pure love, is never time wasted.
