Historical Tidbit:  West Bridgewater 1890

West Bridgewater, one of our oldest settlements, is situated in the northwesterly part of Plymouth County, 25 miles south of Boston. The main line of the Old Colony Railroad skirts the eastern border, with stations at Matfield and Satucket; sending from the former a branch to Easton, which bas stations at West Bridgewater centre and Cochesett. The last two places and Matfield are the post-offices. The other village is Jerusalem.

The town is bounded on the north by Brockton, on the east by East Bridgewater, on the south by Bridgewater, and on the west by Easton. The assessed area is 9,822 acres; of which 2,890 are wood-land, containing pine, maple, oak and birch. The underlying rock is sienitic and carboniferous. The surface is remarkably even, with a gentle inclination toward the south. Nearly 1,000 acres are in swale, or wet meadow, which produces a valuable hay-crop. The soil is generally a sandy loam. The town is drained by Salisbury-Plain River in the northeastern, Town River in the central, and Hockamock Brook in the western section. These streams furnish motive power of considerable value. There are good roads, and the appearance of the farms and dwellings indicates thrift and respectability.

There are two boot and shoe factories, a shovel factory, one making eyelet machines, and others of less importance. The value of the aggregate manufactures in 1885 was $134,461. The product of the 51 farms was valued at $103,043. The population was 1,707; of whom 443 were legal voters. The valuation in 1888 was $969,589, with a tax-rate of 1.45 per cent. There were 382 taxed dwelling-houses. The ten public school-houses - occupied by primary and grammar schools - are valued at $7,200. The high-school instruction is given in the Harvard Collegiate Institute, whose two edifices are valued at $115,000. Beside the school-rooms, the main building contains a large lecture hall. This institution was founded in 1883 by a bequest of $80,000 left by Benjamin B. Howard for the purpose about 20. years ago. He also left $2,000 to aid in establishing public lectures, and the sum of $20,000 to the Unitarian Church in this town. The other churches are the Baptist and Methodist.

Ticks and Your Dog
A boy & his Dog

Ticks can transmit dangerous diseases when they attach to a host and feed.  A tick must be attached for several hours in order to transmit Lyme disease to a host. If you check your dog (and yourself) daily, you have a chance of finding and removing any ticks before they can transmit Lyme disease.

Even if you are using an effective tick control product, you should still check your dog daily for ticks and remove any as soon as you find them. You should never remove a tick with your fingers. Tweezers work well, but be sure to grasp the tick close to the head and pull gently to avoid leaving the mouthparts embedded in the skin. Tick removal tools are also very easy to use. Avoid using lighter fluid, matches, or other products that may irritate the skin or cause serious injuries to your dog. When in doubt, ask your veterinary care team for assistance removing the tick.

Experts have Agreed On The Best Ways to Prevent Concussion

A concussion is a brain injury; the only known cure is prevention. Helmets can protect against skull fractures and more serious brain injuries but cannot prevent a concussion; therefore, it is vitally important to be well-informed about prevention. Many products have claimed to prevent concussions but none have been substantiated.

Concussion Signs and Symptoms

There are a wide variety of signs and symptoms associated with concussions. No two concussions are the same and individuals may experience only some of the symptoms. Symptoms may not show up immediately; they may be noticed a few hours or days later. Exertion exacerbates symptoms. Remember: if a concussion is suspected, the athlete should be immediately removed from play!

Baseline Assessments/Cognitive Testing

Pre-season cognitive baseline testing is relatively new to youth sports. Typically a short computerized test administered prior to the beginning of the season, it measures selected brain processes and scores the test for each athlete to establish the athlete's baseline. If a concussion is suspected during the season, s/he can re-test. The computer software compares the baseline score to the re-test score and alerts the clinician of a reliable change in the score. Computerized cognitive testing can also be used during management/treatment even when a baseline has not been established. The changes/improvements in scores over time help to determine progress toward recovery. It is important to remember that computerized cognitive baseline testing is only a tool to be used by a trained clinician. It cannot diagnose a concussion and should always be used as one component of a concussion assessment.      www.sportsconcussion.com

Humans are social animals; we need each other. Yet being there, listening and having compassion can be challenging...

"We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it."
~ John Lennon

"Intense love does not measure, it just gives."
~ Mother Teresa

"If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace."
~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Time spent nurturing a relationship, in pure love, is never time wasted.

We deliver meals based on need, so whether long or short term, we can help you or a loved one eat properly.  Whether recovering from surgery or an illness, or just not having the mobility to get to the market on a regular basis, Meals on Wheels is there to support seniors in our communities

All meals served meet one-third of a participant's daily nutritional requirements and are designed to be low in sodium, fat, and sugar.  And if the participant's doctor requests a diabetic diet plan, we can usually accommodate that by offering a modified meal.    www.sselder.org
